  1. sorry its all new to me , what are the main determing features of a crossover bus , if any ? as mine has high indicators , square back lights , petrol flap , but the front bumper doesnt have the bump that sticks out ??
has someone repared the pannel and not replaced the deformation part ??

    its a 73 Swale-20140112-01162.jpg

  2. yeh looks like it.Whats the bumper fixed too??

  3. That'd be my guess too.
Cross dressers have early style bumpers.

Cross overs have the early style bumpers, so no deformation panel. It looks as if someone has replaced your early bumper for a late bumper.

  5. no 73 has a defo panel , i havnt got pic of mine handy , but bumper bolts go into it , mines 73

    Yep your right just checked!

  7. It looks like it has been cut off and replaced with the wrong panel [less expensive],the front arch has certainly been done...

But I would not worry too much about it...

  8. my 73 panel has a deformation panel, late bumpers, square tail lights, a lowlight dash cluster and a fuel flap..

  9. our 72 has high lights, square bumpers, defo panel, fuel flap and early side windows

vw heinz-ed the left over bits quite early on with the late bay and you find weird and wonderful combinations, wait until some 'oficionado' comes and tell you your bus is all wrong :D

  10. Dont worry , mine is also a 73 but left overs from Christmas dinner I think so the petrol flap etc and slightly early dash clock, but high level indicators. This is normal as long as you cant see the road through your floor dont worry about it.

  11. Agree, there would be hundreds of combos depending on what stock they needed to get rid of at the time...
My panel is what it is - rust free, registered and roadworthy... I'd rather spend my time keeping it that way than listen to someone tell me how wrong it is or "someone" must have modified it...
Its a vw and its still on the road, thats all i need to worry about.

@Diddymen has modified his late crossover to do away with the deformation panel.

There were two x over model. 71-72 early bumper. Aug 72 - May 73 late bumpers and high indicators. Not parts bin or leftovers, but a definate staged move to late bay.

people only recognise the early one as it is more obvious with the low indicators and early bumper.

  13. Oooh so mines a cross dresser then? Fancy.. wondered why it had eyeliner in the glovebox!! haha

  14. A quick check is the steering box, cast iron and it's a '72 model year. Aluminium and it's a '73 model year.

  15. Mine has early bumpers and high indicators and squared off rear vents and rear lights. Defo a crossover but it is on its third face. Front panel. So may have started life with low lights but can't be sure!!!

Malc Yours is a latebay  not a cross dresser :( after using all the early front ends they then made lates, it's a proper latebay, infact after they got rid of the fuel flap they then made inferior late bays ;) it was'nt a stage they went through on purpose, just coz they then went onto change a few bits later on don't mean they meant that at the time, it just evolved through new ideas but yours is a LATEBAY FFS o_O

  17. im defo never late in mine, always early  .

  18. Thats definitely the best combo of lights and bumpers, VW should have done it like this i think (i know Brazils sort of are) :)

  19. mine is - built may 73 , i prefer the early bumper look but if it does not fit i will be happy to just restore her.
thanks for some clarification , i need to do more homework . :)
