Advice needed on spray painting! Why is my primer ending up with fine cracks like miniature crazy paving? I'm respraying bits and bops of the bodywork and currntly working on the door slider covers. I've taken then back to bare metal with a mixture of stripper and abrasion, etched primed with No8, and now trying to prime with white primer from Jewal. Everything was fine until the primer, which has ended up in places with a fine set of crazy cracks as if the paint has shrunk as it dried. I used panel wipe and a tack cloth before and after the etch coat. Still an amateur on the painting front but keen to learn so any advice on what I'm doing wrong gratefully received!
What was the ambient temp when you sprayed? Thick or thin coats? Might actually be a reaction between the acid 8 and the jewal primer.... you know that the acid 8 is a primer in itself?
Paradox - I'm only leaving it only a few minutes after wiping down before painting. Paul - yes I wondering if the acid 8 would react with the primer. The coats aren't as even as I'd like but it's the thin bits that are cracking (where I've got it too thick and its run it's not cracked - typical). Would you recommend just using the acid 8 and skipping the high build? Zed - it was a lovely evening lt night, dry, probably about 14, and I've had reasonable success in cooler conditonsint the past....
You may be laying the high build on before all the panel wipe has had chance to evaporate If your rubbing with the tack rag instead of lightly dabbing you may be leaving glue residue behind which is reacting with the high build The high build primer may be reacting with the etch primer
I'd say it's solvent reaction between paint systems... you'll need to leave the acid 8 24 to 48hrs before applying the high build primer... either that, or use upol high build primer (think this is no.5... it's in a blue can if I remember correctly)
Zed - Err, well I miss-read Zed for Terrordales. Obvious mistake to make, I expect it happens a lot....
I know. Not even close, Terrordales I don't have a big bushy beard for starters, though I am an old git.
