    Quick search and found this...

Basically it glows when you shine a UV light on it, showing you where the oil is

I've never used it, but read many times when it's been suggested and proved successful.

The thing is, I can see where the oil is coming from- I had a look last night- cleaned all oil off the casing and waited an hour or so, then checked again- the join between the casings just below the cam plug is where it’s coming from. I’ll get back onto it when I can and split the casings again and have a proper close look- hopefully see something that explains it, but it just looks like it’s not sealed properly although it’s strange that it was also coming from there before I opened it up.

It is possible that somebody forgot the M8 stud near the bottom of the engine on the right hand side, that gets hidden in dirt.
Then they tried to lever the case halves apart after undoing "all the nuts" and bent or gouged the case instead..
Have a good look at the gap between the case halves in that area - if you can poke a 0.2mm feeler gauge in the gap, - the Curil-T2 is for less than that, you may be forced to use a more substantial silicone based gasket maker to fill the gap.

Or just noticing - the cam plug with a ridge goes in a case with a groove . And there is another style for a case without a groove ..

If you put a groove style plug in a "smooth" case, it could start to bend the case apart. .. Just a little..

Yea I know what you mean but everything seems nice and flat and from memory there was no damage to the mating surfaces when I had the case apart.

would you recommend any other case sealant if there is a gap issue?

  7. You shouldn’t need it. Obvious Q: are the case fasteners torqued up to spec?

Doesn’t seem to be much sealant squeeze-out there, or have you wiped it off?

This is a long shot, but does the cam plug look quite recessed? Could this mean it may not be seated in the right place.

Yea 14 lb/ft if I remember correctly. There was sealant there but it’s been wiped off while cleaning all the oil leakage. I do remember being particularly sparing with sealant around the camshaft end bearing and now I’m wondering if I had enough on there but really can’t remember. I’ll strip it down again and have a closer look- if there’s nothing obvious, I’ll make sure I’ve got enough sealant on it and try again, failing that- anyone got an engine for sale?

Here's my cam plug if it helps, I did wipe the curil off one side 16474638428224787833625140064382.jpg

Yea pretty sure it’s in right- it’s pretty much flush with the case- a snug fit and would be difficult to fit incorrectly, although having said that I will double check the fit when I dismantle it again.

You’ve got a fair bit more squeeze out than I had- all the advice was to use very sparingly, I’ll maybe try to be more liberal next time.

  13. Splosh it on round the cam plug, thin brushing round the case.

It looks more a than it is, i was more worried about seeing a dry spot where there may not have been curil, I suppose the case will only use what it needs and squish the rest out, I don't think a non setting compound will keep the case apart,
But like everything else , I'm probably wrong

  17. Poor bloke… 5 minutes ago he was told to be sparing with the sealant and now he’s not used enough! I feel for you chap!!!! It’s good for advice here but you kinda have to chose whose you follow sometimes !

It's a fair point...weren't we discussing the Muir ethos just earlier today:thinking:

  19. Indeed! Bentley and Haines have their place but I do love Muirs approach. But then again we’re years down the line. Personally I’m attached to my bus because I’ve had it so long. I do like air cooled VWs generally but there’s a whole range of attitudes people have. Braggers, techies, tuners, concoursers, racers, ratters and those who just drove an old van that they like and want to keep it going forever. So a lot of differing approaches to a problem a lot of likes and dislikes and Some snooty barstewards eh are right up their own wotsits! ( none of those here of course). Sorry… this isn’t sorting that leak out is it Captain!

Is that yellow stain the dye from the oil leak
If it is then the leak looks to be higher up
