Crank shaft

  1. Yesterday I made the most of the nice weather and took the kids for a day out in the bus all was well until about 3 miles from home then a loud clattering noise and the oil light came on , so I stop and called the recovery people, while waiting I checked the oil the dip stick was dry but no oil leaks to be found when the recovery man arrive he put some oil in and it started but still a clattering noise . His opinion was a crank seal had gone and it was either a bearing or the crankshaft or both . Now I know very little about engines but I have a friend how is a mechanic and is really good , my questions as I won't see him till Monday and this is doing my head in . Is this a really expensive job

Yes most likely it is. If a big end has gone it will have ruined the crank and a con-rod. If you had no oil, probably ruined the lot and damaged the case, possibly beyond repair.

Where's the oil gone? It would be splattered up the back of you bus wherever it leaked from if it had indeed leaked.

yes it's the one what had the fire and the engine was rebuilt recently for sure....

  6. Rick you spend too much time on here

Zed, diplomacy isn't your string point is it.

You should always check your oil levels regularly on an air cooled engine, I do it before each and every trip and again at the end.

I fear you may have caused major damage if you have run it without any oil in the engine, if you have had such a major oil leak and as rickypooo has stated its a recent rebuild I would get on to the rebuilders ASAP

still very strange to loose 3.5? litres of oil and the light to not show signs before....... i think if none is on the stick you lost at least 2.5 litres before the light came on? as said surely you would see A lots of smoke if it burnt it, or B lots of splattering if it's fired out somewhere or C a messy drive.......

He asked and TBH I thought he expected the answer. This is a guy who's been through the mill with his bus. He knows how to take it on the chin and sort it out. He should do by now - if you could have a problem he's had it. At least I'm not now advising him he should have checked his oil - Derr - think he might have twigged that.

    Nice camper BTW Lobie. :)

I was one of the peeps who advised him to take the insurance money when it caught fire. :food: Humble pie eaten. Good excuse for a 1776 stroker. :)

  13. Oil was checked before journey van didn't smoke and up till this happened had been running very smooth rang the guy how built the engine and he said he never touched the crankshaft he just rebuilt the top half then he offered to sell me a recon engine I did a bit of name calling and hung up I would name and shame him and his company but I'm sure there's a rule on here about that

  15. Didnt your insurance company pay for the engine trebuild after the fire?
If so it will have a warrenty id suspect

Top end rebuild without at least an inspection and clean up of the bottom end will nearly always end up it spitting the bottom end

Sorry to hear of your troubles dude your having a hard time of things with your bus

  16. i think the insurance just bunged the cash over , as said if you only traveled 3 miles it must be there somewhere or you never checked it correctly to start with .Thought you would of at least knew what the guy did to your engine after the fire as i would of thought that a total rebuild or replacement would be needed not a top end job .
Hope you get this sorted and its not to costly

  17. I didn't know about about the whole previous fire saga of this.

As I'm ill informed I'll politely bow out of this

Zed, don't have a cow man I was only messing

  20. Am I right in thinking a top end rebuild isn't worth the paper it's printed on if your not doing the bottom as well?
