Covid restrictions and MOT repairs.

  1. Hi everyone.

Hope someone could help me here. My MOT is due in April and after last years advisories it’ll definitely need an exhaust. It’s a ‘79 US Westy with the awkward flanges so off the shelf is problematic.

My plan was to to take it for a stainless at Turbo Thomas. It still is but I’m struggling to find out if that travel is allowed. Im in Sheffield and TT is in Redditch.

Anyone know if I can take it down with the missus following and bringing me back? He needs it for a few days.

    Thanks in advance

    Don't they post?
There has been a recent thread about someone with the US exhaust and a link was put up to one of the usual suspects.

  3. He’s said I can take it off and send it down but it’s above my skill set. And the guy who looks after it here has advised against it.

  4. You may be able to travel late march or you could degree your mot maybe

Why is that? Whereabout are you?
Photos of the state of your exhaust might be useful.

  6. If it's an MOT repair its reasonable to have it repaired by an exhaust specialist. You can still take your car for a replacement exhaust, you don't have to order it from kwik fit and fit it yourself.
I would confirm with him if he's doing replacements at his garage and if so, book an appointment and have a copy of the email with you in the unlikely event that you get pulled over.

You probably won't find a definitive answer anywhere, but it's not like your taking a sound system to the woods for a rave.

Edit: getting a lift back from someone in your bubble is far safer than jumping on the train/bus/taxi etc.

  7. I`d suggest leaving it until April but book it in and see how the land lies nearer the time .

If you look at the facts , and it`ll never come to this , it obviously isn`t your only form of transport within the household so therefore not urgent although it might seem so to you . The fact you can`t just pop down to kwikfit for a replacement isn`t here nor there - it`s not essential so therefore i`d leave it until things calm down a bit .
You`d be very unlucky to get pulled but in my eyes it`s all about self regulation - up to you i guess

    Just my tuppence-worth ...

  8. Thanks guys. You’re sort of confirming what I was thinking and that’s what I was after. I’m in Sheffield. I understand the vibe of my garage here, they don’t want the van with them for a fortnight and a headache fitting something that’s been handmade elsewhere away from the rest of the van.

  9. And remember that provided you are genuinly going from A to B for what you consider to be a reasonable reason, with paperwork to confirm it, the police will almost certainly only request you to return home, which you would be wise to do. Probably best to avoid Derbyshire police though!

  10. just buy a an exhaust?

mine also has the triangle flanges (i'm assuming that's what you mean?) I bought a pacesetter, came from the usa, about 120 all in incl the shipping. Or if you want to avoid importing then buy the (rubbish) empi that jk/ heritage sells - it'll fall to bits pretty quick but will be fine to get you through MOT . I had both, pacesetter is much better quality but unfortunately no uk suppliers.

Its not the Derbyshire Police you need to worry about, they're busy out in the sticks (quite a few villages have seen increased break ins) and the village where my parents live see weekly mini bus trips of walking parties come from Birmingham for a day's jolly so there are very few police patrolling the M1. South York on the other hand seem to be more visible.

Good job SYBC are on furlough :D

I’ve got a 78 US van and it needed a new box after the last one fell off somewhere

I went to Hawleys out Crystal Peaks way and a guy there formed the pipe needed and put a box on. Tho the box was a bit smaller than previous one. I may have been being scroogey tho :)

Think Hawleys at Hillsborough do bespoke stainless steel ones, @Jinkjude might be worth asking and may not have the scene tax.

I had Hawleys at Crystal Peaks do a full stainless system on a BMW; they made a decent job of it.
