Saw on the news how covid cases are increasing... it's a concerning situation, but it got me wondering how other major diseases compare...
If Google is to be believed, Cancer averages 450 deaths a day and heart conditions a similar number at 460.
Just thought thst it put things in perspective.

  2. Good point.

Quite surprising/depressing how many folk die each day in the UK, but there are 68 million of us.

  3. I thought that the average death rate was around 1% last year - and over the last 20 years or so has been up to 1.4 % . So in 2020 just over 6oo,oo0 people died , slightly up on the 5 year average of about 550,000 - an increase no doubt due to Covid. So we are looking at approaching 1650 deaths per day .

The real issue here is how much intensive care capacity we have blocked up with Covid cases.
And how much of that load we might reduce by simply going back to more mask wearing and distancing again, and getting a higher percentage vaccinated so there are fewer people suffering badly.
Vacccine passports for covid and flu may be a good idea. After all a lot of countries dont let you in without certificates of vaccination.
Its not going away just because businesses and my fluffy haired stupid doppelganger say so.

Think the statistics are all out of tilt the last couple of years due to COVID lockdowns .
Less people on roads so less road deaths , less murders but thats being distorted due to more domestic murders in lockdown. Then the flu death figures were all weird as noone went out to spread it .
There are loads of other factors apparently distorting average figures this last two years
All on all just ignore the figures , i am just happy to still be here , having said that my shoulder is giving me some jip after crawling out from under floorboards running wires .

It might put things into perspective better if you'd also quoted the covid deaths figure. ;)

Think it was about 130 ... I did forget, but in my defence, its on the news daily/ several times a day .... it just made me wonder, as 100+ a day sounded a lot .. seems it not in the scheme of things.

  9. I think the latest propaganda push is because the NHS is more concerned with being overwhelmed with flu cases this winter but knows no one takes much notice of flu risk, so ramping up the Covid stats works better as people are just about still taking notice of it. Infection rates are high, death rates are low. Live your life but be considerate of others.

  12. I cannot see what is wrong with reintroducing mandatory face masks in public areas such as shops public transport and introduce covid passports.
It isn't propaganda and why wait until the stats are at a level above those at the height of the pandemic.
As a country we should be ashamed at the lack of cohesive action that allows countries like Morocco and the Philippines to put us on their red list.
Covid passports may encourage those who haven't bothered to get vaccinated to act responsible.
There are some who may disagree with this view, we are all entitled to our opinions.

My wife said the same thing about the masks.

  14. I've never stopped wearing masks in shops etc, but I'm clearly in the minority, that includes all ages.

I think the constant manipulation of statistics has become propaganda, the fact remains that our infection rates are high, but our mortality rates are low enough to suggest the vaccine action is protecting people enough to prevent serious illness or death. As I understand it, a significant amount of deaths are of non-vaccinated and those with underlying illness - who realistically should still be shielding to some extent. The biggest mistake was to call the lifting of restrictions 'freedom day'.

Notwithstanding, the lifting of restrictions was not compulsory. If some people remain anxious of mixing in crowded places - then don't!

I still wear a mask in shops, as I understand the science.I try to explain to people, my ‘cold breath’ theory, to help them understand.
    Sort of goes like this.
You can see your breath hang in the air, on a cold, windless day.
It’s like that all the time, in say, a busy supermarket/shop, only it’s invisible. You are walking, and breathing in, other peoples breath!
    It’s simple.

Or if you've ever stood near a smoker. You are breathing in everybody else's breath just the same as that all the time. It's just that exhaled smoke is more noticeable

Having just been to Scotland and still having to wear a mask in shops it really is no hardship. I still wear one in shops anyway and can’t see why people want to complain so much.

A friend has just visited her son in Germany and said how much better they are at it than us, and that she felt more relaxed because of it.

I like the cold breath example @Soggz

It's all over the place here. Local shops won't let you in without a mask, Tesco don't care if you wear one or not.

  19. I heard someone liken the death rate to 9/11. 100 deaths a day equals one 9/11 per month. Why aren’t people taking it seriously?

  20. Because it is a meaningless comparison - whoever likened it to 9/11 is scaremongering to substantiate their own opinion and preference on how we, as a collective of nearly 70million people, should behave.
