Thinking of covering my tired plywood Westy roof-lining with vinyl to brighten things up a bit. Anyone done this successfully. Probably looking at sonething like this just glued on tbh http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-1512-headlining.aspx !
yup i have done it and it looked ace i may have some pictures somewhere, there is some very very thin material for wrapping thing, its maybe half the thickness of standard stuff, if you use the thicker stuff you cant get the ply back into the rails on the side
Boat builders use very similar stuff, and a mate over in ireland did his devon roof, and because its insulated too, its made a huge difference even to road noise. he did say if possible take the roof off as trying to make it stick above your head is a pain in the bum!!
Sacrilege maybe but the cab headlining on mine was half covered in bits of vinyl that looked a mess. I cut new boards from 3mm marine ply for the cab and side trim and covered them with foam backed brushed nylon headlining: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3M-Headli...12848?pt=UK_Crafts_Fabric&hash=item417167f610 I also covered the underside of the bed, a bit tricky to refit the cab board and the side rails needed opening slightly for the extra thickness of the headlining. Use high temperature heavy duty spray adhesive.

Ta guys. Any pics would bre fantastic. Interested in seeing if i can get something nice and thin and take the point about the glue baing mega strong as it would need to be covered flat on the bench and then bent into the concave shape and you dont want it peeling and sagging down in the middle. The lining if my roof was done in ply and fablon and thats due for e refresh!
I've been holding back here as I always get ******* taking comments about artexing and home decorating . I originally thought you had an original bare ply ceiling so I wouldn't want to cover that over if that's what you've got. But if yours has the basket weave Fablon stuff you can get it from Go Westy in the US. It's pretty expensive though. I've used extra wide vinyl wallpaper with a similar finish on mine. You can however select from lots of different patterns. If you take the plywood panels down you can paste the paper on, a lot easier than contact adhesive. PM for details.
I do have the bare ply roof in the van just fablon in the roof. Not worried about covering it as it isnt pretty and my bus is about as original as .... (insert similie). I do know what your referring to but not quite what Im after.

Yep that does look nice but a lot more roof in mine (early style roof aperture) an Id like it a bit "softer"
I think it would look good for minimal effort dicky Just make sure you use high temp spray adhesive or you may find it peeling off in the heat of summer
nail on head there. Will get the best available. Not going to be expensive and not a difficult job either. Might look at vinyling the interior matalwork as per microbus rather than repainting it but thats for later as some work required around windows at some point!
