Hi there , I'm looking at needing a bare metal resto on my bus , 74 bay from dry usa state , it needs rear arches , a little bit of cill ,and a couple of other bits welding nothing major , then rust stop treating , then painting two colours ,inside needs painting and engine bay , pop top painting ,under sealing ,wheels painting ,and finally a good wax oil in all the rite places , Does anyone have any ideas on the cost for this work , cheers .
I`ve got a £300 `mates rates` paint job - nothing to write home about looks fine .. I would go for the 3.5k ..... and then put away another 5k to do it all over again in a few years time
I've had two quotes to bare metal and do all the other work I've mentioned , a simple re spray wouldn't be good enough It's got to go to metal ,
We just can't see how it that can be done for that price. Then again we haven't seen your bus and don't know where you live which makes a big difference.
This is a £10k plus bare metal job https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.247569982067394.1073741831.144882895669437&type=3 The man hours involved in the prep / work you can see how it adds up
Probably because they won`t replace everything that NEEDS replacing . If it`s solid now it probably won`t be in a few years .. Metal quality ain`t what it used to be either , monkey metal is a pretty common currency these days .
We have had a few quotes over the last few days for body finishing and paint, with us having done the welding and initial work. These all came in at the £5k mark so I can easily see a full resto costing the £10k if you are having it all done for you with proper NOS panels, and full panel replacement instead of partial. However if you are willing to put in a good amount of elbow grease and ask around, you can often find people willing to help out for considerably less and still get a very good finish. It really depends on what level of finish you want to achieve. We looked at 2 busses next to each other, 1 which had full panel replacement on both rear corners and up to the swage line on the 1/4 panels and one which had the Klocker arches and corner which was in for filling and paint. There was no denying the full panel replacement plus 1/4 panel up to swage line looked straighter, which meant the partial repair will need considerably more filling and smoothing to get a decent finish. It has certainly caused me some more thought we we send 'Burt' off for acid dipping as we were originally going for the Klocker approach and the £270 a side saving.
I wouldn't spend 10 k on my bus would rather sell it and buy a prototype bay done ,it would stand me at 18k done and it just wouldn't be worth that ,
