So if my grease filled steering box lasts 50 years will you then agree with me that it’s ok to fill it with good old standard grease, 10 years in only 40 to go
If all it does is drive down to the fishing lake, scares a few ducks and returns home, then it knows the way and doesn't really need a steering box..
I drive the carp bus on average 3 times a week that includes fishing trips so let’s say an average of 25 miles a week (it’s probably more) 25x 52= 1300 per year x 10 = 13000 so easily 10, 000 miles with no issues, let’s see how it is after another 40 years
If it’s leaking…what about pumping it full of grease, like Baz has done, run it for a few miles, to make a few ‘grease Cavities’, then put oil in it to fill them. Would the grease stop the oil leak, if you can’t be arsed to fix it properly?
For if the box leaked. Grease causes spaces in the box due to movement, I would imagine, but the oil would fill the gaps and not leak out? It’s only a thought…
I filled mine with grease, drove it for 6 months and topped it up( hardly any) as I say that was 10 years ago and it’s still as smooth as my head, now this is not for the purist but if you want a quick easy fix to a leaking steering box it works
Are there any threads on here that detail overhauling a steering box... or links to something that goes into a bit of detail ~?
I think that’s a fab idea if you only put a smallish amount of grease in, it’ll gradually fill the bottom of the box and stop the oil coming out that you’ve added at a later date. Possibly only a small amount of oil though. Ozziedog,,,,,,,far better than no lubey dooby at all .
Ah yes Mr Snotts, but I was going on the. ‘it’s leaking oil mate’. type of scenario. Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,Or put on a new one ,,,,,, oh yeah
I changed the seals on mine and on the bench, even left upside down overnight, it didn’t leak. Put it on the bus, it leaks….from the top seal. I’m going to try the Penrith gear oil? someone on here suggested, cos it’s infuriating.
Rotating shaft seals normally don't leak until you rotate the shaft. The problem is probably the state of the sealing surface of the shaft rather than the seal or type of oil. I've upended gearboxes and left them overnight without them leaking at all.
