I've got a recon steering box i'm going to fit shortly, was planning to use the gear oil i already have but been reading (dangerous i know) on thesamba about folks who have been using thixotropic grease. I know lots of threads on here saying grease is bad/ holds debris /causes wear etc where oil allows particles to fall to the bottom of the box. But, this stuff seems to work like a fluid when moved, then solidifies - like magic Any one tried it? Any good? How do you ensure that the box is fully packed? Thoughts? https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=733964&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20
Not sure on corn head grease but another alternative to oil in the Penrite steering box lube, I've been using this for a number of years without issue. Discussed on a recent thread.
I wouldn't have thought there would be enough movement in a steering box to turn it to liquid. Thixotropic means as something gets worked it gets runnier, that's one reason the printing ink I use goes around a set of rollers, but I can't see how that would work in a steering box with only a modest amount of movement
understand something the roller on the pitman shaft, cross shaft, second motion shaft or out put shaft, what ever you want to call it In your steering box runs on needle roller bearings These rollers are captive between 2 tight captive thrust bearings (if they weren't you'd have free play in your box). how do you think they get lubricated. Oil is the only thing that's going to get in there. I've a business that has referbished over 100 boxes, 90 weight is the oil that is the go. if your steering box leaks it out have it fixed so it doesn't.
I have done 100k miles in my bus in 13 years with EP90 oil in the steering box. It came with very little oil in it, and wear on the side cover bushing. I replaced the bushing in the side cover and fitted new seals and refilled with EP90 oil. Still has oil in it, and no problems after driving it a long way. Very thick oil/runny grease may also work, but ordinary lithium grease may get squeezed out of the way.
Again…The vw engineers knew what they were doing, all those years ago, so why would people think they are better?, or so I keep seeing in my replies, etc, etc…
I think as ZF made steering boxes by the million, they probably did know what they were doing. Unfortunately for them, they didn't have the bloke down the pub to tell them they were doing it all wrong.
I think the bloke down the pub, did the rough sketch of the first steering box, on the back of a fag packet, once…it’s usually where all the good ideas come from…
