Converting US electrics to UK

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by AndyC, Dec 24, 2014.

  1. I've got a US Westy import that has still got US style electric plugs.

Is there an easy way to convert the panel to UK style plugs, or is it worth just using plug convertors?

the transformer in the van is 110v this just basically charges the leisure battery as all the stuff in the van is 12v anyway so when you plug into site you're only actually keeping the battery charged, all the transformer gubbins can be easily replaced with a ctek or suchlike and the set up will still work, you can get a converter lead to continue using the American socket/lead if you wish. @matty has some good leisure install info in mech/tech

  4. Ah right, that makes sense.

Electrics isn't my strong point. Nor is old engines.......

Good decision buying this camper! LOL

  6. Interestingly the circuit breakers are rated to UK voltage as well as US (Still don't use it though)

  9. Is it that easy?
I'm a real newbie when it comes to electrics. Not my strong point.

  10. Should be. You're just taking out a minimal amount of mains wiring. Have a search for @matty 's guide on here.

  11. Think I'm gonna go with one of these.

Presumably the original wiring goes from Exterior Socket --> Fuse box/panel --> Sockets.
So the new wiring goes from Exterior Socket --> RCD box --> Sockets

I guess the best place to locate everything to is under the rear bench seat? Then it stays hidden keeping it looking original.

What happens to the fridge electrics when the old fuse box/panel is bypassed?

@matty if you could let me know a rough price for fitting, I might bite the bullet and come down to you.

  12. Yes and yes but fridge runs in 12v so you will need an adapter/ ctek and just run it from a 12 v source. If it can run on 110v then you will lose that ability

  13. And I assume the easiest way to do that is to run a battery charger from one of the sockets to the leisure battery?

  14. Yep exactly that. Its what I have done.
