Compression test

  1. did a compression test today 110 ish on all of em except 2 that was nothing That plug unlike the rest was covered in oil , so new piston rings on order , never done em before but with advice from back2ba6 on here think I can do it , bus refuses to start as well now ? It was running rich before and struggling with hills , but it's kept going for us It explains the blowing noise it's been making and the drinking oil ,

  2. Are you saying cylinder 2 had 0 compression? Even with rings shot I would expect to see some compression? Sure you havent got a hole in the piston? Are you able to get a leak down test performed?

  3. Yea nothing on number 2 , its all coming out and apart anyhow ,

  4. Fair enough.... start a thread on the rebuild!

  5. More like how not to rebuild , But you have a good point with the piston ,

  6. Pop your valve cover off and the rockers and see if all the valve stems are at the same height

Zero compression and a lot of oil .. you might be able to poke around with a USB borescope camera down the spark plug hole .. my camera is 5mm diameter.. and see the damage. On the other hand taking the engine out may be a good start. Then you can get the cylinder head off and take a proper look.

I nearly bought one from Aldi a few weeks ago

  10. I got one from ebay for about £4 - doesnt work on my old Samsung S4 (should be fine on newer phones) but works lovely on the laptop. VERY useful, have managed to read serial numbers from the reverse of turbos in tight spot in engine bay, looked for damp in a wall, had a look down my throat (not tried the other end...yet)

In short - money well spent -get one today

  12. Have you taken the rockers off yet?

  13. If it was me and suspected a broke piston ring etc and number 2 was filling with oil ,the last thing I would do is try to start it ,debris from said piston could go somewhere not nice...;)

  15. No not yet ,

  16. Took rocker cover of , all the rods are in place , that's about all I know to look for , and when I turn the engine by hand that cylinder makes a loud air escaping noise ,, it's still all coming out and apart ,prob the weekend ,,,,, ps is it a good idea to soak the heads and barrels in brake fluid, ??? It was 10p a bottle in the clearance bit of b&m , I dunno :)

  17. All apart now , big chip out of valve On number two , took pick but can't get em on ,, Rings look ok but will do em anyhow ,, is this something I've done ? Badly adjusted valves perhaps , or just bad luck /Vw fun

  18. Is the chip out of the face or the seat?

  19. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Once it starts to leak it burns a V in the side of the valve. Was it exhaust?

  20. Erm it was the smaller one of the two , and it chipped on the edge ,, have another bash at pics in a min
