compression test

  1. having trouble with me bus.. was taking it for mot yesterday, after having a respray come resto, only managed about 1 and half miles, it broke down, thought it was fuel related, have had new dells 36's fitted, anyways tried new fuel pump [electric] it ticks over fine, just after said mile , it feels like its out of fuel, and engine coughs and splutters, and cuts out, if you leave it ten mins, or so , it fires up ok, so after a lot of head scratching, got it compression tested, could only manage to test no.1 and no. 4, no.1 was 60... no.4 was 72, bad.very bad, but tested it without throttle wide open, does it make much difference, without throttle open?? its a type 4 1700cc

  2. Can you breathe through a straw? ;)

Throttle needs to be wide open, all of the plugs need to be out!!

    snotty and Lasty like this.
  3. yer, all plugs were out, so I should try again with throttle open, thanks

  4. Back to basics mate. Chances are it's either fuel delivery problem or something is breaking down on the ignition (condenser!). Unlikely its a compression issue I think. Could be fuel pump or float settings on carbs.

  5. yes, it does totally feel like fuel, its got electronic ignition, when I took it out yesterday, it felt great, could actually feel acceleration, but not for long unfortunatlley , tried a new pump. just worried about comp. result, hoping it makes a difference with throttle wide open

If the carbs are leaking fuel then it may do this kind of thing - run well at first then sort of fade out. Then the float chambers overflow, the engine floods as soon as you take your foot off the throttle and wont start until the petrol has boiled off. In other words, too much fuel will kill it as well as too little.

Are the plugs black or whitish when you take them out ? Black would be too rich or a fuel leak.

If your pump is putting out too much pressure this could cause the problem.

Or like mine , the moulding flash shaken off the float in the carb by the violence of the backfiring when the rocker arm slid sideways on No2 exhaust on Tuesday .. It jammed on top of the float near the needle valve.

  7. well today I found out why it has low compression... engine out, head off, two cracks on both inlet valves... me not a happy camper, any ideas where to get new cyl. heads from????
