cold start with twin carbs

  1. ok, I haven't fitted them yet but just wondered if there was a knack to starting an engine without choke as the twin ICH's don't have any?

pumpy pumpy feather throttle for 10 seconds or so until there's a little heat in the heads.

  3. Is that a direct quote from the manual Zed?

Cheers, will try when I eventually get them fitted

Mine starts first turn TBH even when left for a month, that's ICT's so almost identical carbs. Then just keep it going with minimal throttle so as not to annoy the neighbours and within 10 seconds it ticks over fine albeit a little slowly in the winter.

  5. cool thanks

  6. On the other hand, our 2L type 4 with twin Dells is an absolute swine to start from cold. Once running 'tis lovely though.

As you have no chokes to cut off the air and rich the mixture, you need to pump the pedal like buggery with some carbs to get the same result.

  8. I've also found that a high output coil helps a lot with cold starting on no choke engines :)

  9. Totally the same as this for me too, even on the coldest winter day I never need to pump the throttle prior to start up.

  10. Mine suffers from Dell cold starting malaise too! Pump pedal furiously 6 to 10 times and it may or may not go - small blip on the throttleonce fired (not oo much) once its fired it ticks over striaght away - as zed says a few seconds at idle before you rev so it doesnt bog down. Mine seems to start on one side first, second carb is fed from first through banjo so might fit a tee to see if that makes a difference (anyon know this?)

  11. Webers here, start easily with a couple of pumps, winter or summer.

  12. Mechanical or electric pump?

  13. Mechanical!

  14. if he said it in a german accent would it sound more credible?;)

  15. if the pump works as a non return valve and there's fuel in the bowls I'd've thought it wouldn't make a difference tbh....but stranger things happen...

  16. You'll be filling the carb nearest to the pump first... Electric pump would be the way forward :)

  17. I like engines that don't fire up instantly, it gives you a chance to build up a bit of oil pressure first.

  18. Thats as may be but on those days when youve been on a site for a few days and the battery is a bit low its a bit worrying!

  19. Im listening! Any particular pump youd recommend and also would i need a regulator?
