Coil polarity

  1. Ive just fitted a vac advance dizzy with electronic ignition

    I have two wires to connect to the coil one red and one black

    I presume red is 12 volts positive and the black is 12 volt ground

    The old dizzy had one green wire which went to a terminal on the dizzy where no other wires connect

    Is this terminal 12 volt positive or 12 volt negative?

    When i put the multimeter on the coil i get 0volts both sides and with the ignition on i get 12 volts positive both sides

    was the green wire your condenser mate?

    Does that go to 12 volt live or neg?

    i only ask 'cos i did mine and forgot to make notes, luckily one of my many videos showed a close up of my coil and i got it back ok, the top of my coil was positive and the bottom negative, the green wire on mine is condenser and if you look at a video you'll see whatever it went to (think it was the neg), i'm rambling now as my vans not here it's at home lol i'm sure a clevererer operative will be along shortly.....

    yes coil neg deffo just found my video and i know for deffo the coil is orientated on mine positive top negative bottom and you can see the green wire at the bottom lol
     
  6. The red wire from the electronic ignition gors to the coil +ve terminal (15), the black wire goes to the other (1) terminal on the coil. (1) is normally connected to the contact breakers with the green wire. It's the black wire from the module that switches current through the coil.

    You're well aware...don't connect the ign wires the other way round, or you'll kill the ignition module (it'll try to switch an infinite current, shortly before turning into a blob of molten sand :) ).

    If there's no current flowing through the coil, you will measure +12V on both sides.

  8. I made the same mistake when fitting my new coil and electronic 123ignition - got meter out grabbed one wire found 12v and (wrongly) assumed it was +
    you may well see around 12v on both wires, but one will be higher than the other due to the resistance of the coil, the higher voltage is +
    Luckily for me connecting the wrong way for me did not fry my unit, it just did not work

    the green wire would be off the -ve. the black wire from the loom is =ve, your electronic ignition will be red =ve, black -ve just to confuse things. if you look on the coil it will be either marked up as +ve and -ve or 15 and 1, the coil has the voltage passing through it not across it.

    Ive connected it up as snotty said and it wont static time

    Ive got the multimeter on it and im getting a voltage no matter where i twist the dizzy too

    Proper puzzled now?

  14. Shouldent make any difference using a voltmeter instead of a light bulb

    Im getting 14 volts no matter where i move the dizzy so that says to me that the electronic ignition isnt switching the coil
    or am getting it wrong?

  17. Same voltage when i turn the engine by hand

    Negative lead from multimeter to batt neg

    Positive lead from multimeter to negative post on coil

    try putting it on the negative on the coil as thats where you signal comes from ;)

    so positive off mulitimeter onto negative from coil
    negative off multimeter to battery negative

    ahha ok then how is your electronic ignition attatched? is it adjustable is there a ring that gives the unit a signal?
    what reading do you get when you remove the electronic ignition from the distributor?
