Coil for 2 litre with T25 ignition

  1. For my next question.....May have a suspect coil - its a T25 set-up (electronic) can you use a standard coil (got a couple of blue ones kicking around!)

electronic ignition coils are generally higher voltage, 6000volts points around 20,000 for electronic ignition if I remember correctly, try your blue coil but I would expect it either to not work or cause issues, heritage sell the correct coil but its pricey :(

  3. I suspected as much. Think i'll carry a standard dissy and coil in the bus and look around for one. Wonder whats interchangeable - golf possibly but they might be difficult to get too.

  4. new ones are available from gsf (jk too I should imagine) don't forget that you'll probably want to replace the TCI unit (little black box) if the coil needs doing!!

  5. Will have a butchers on veewee and see. Ta:)

GSF couldn't supply me one last week, heritage were expensive. As Paul says its recommended to replace both units as a pair, dunno why

  7. £47 for the coil and the units about the same. Gonna get the coil as a breakdown spare!! TCI will have to wait.

  8. Dicky hold up for a minute!!!
Paul Weeding will you be using the original ignition set up on my engine? (i.e. the type that Dicky is talking about) Or will we be using a performance one?

  9. Holding here boss!

  10. When Paul Weeding replies, I suspect we'll be using a performance system on my 2.2, therefore I have a T25 coil and black box that I have no use for, I presume the black box is the thing connected to the distributor that's about the size of half an iphone?)
If we are changing it then it's good news for you, if not, well at least I tried.

    Dicky and paradox like this.
  11. Let me know would be very interested. If the dissy is available too them will tale the whole shhoting match off you. Cant hurt to have a spare!!!

  12. I can use whatever you want me to dude!!

Depends on how clean/racing/performance look you want!!

coils are available from gsf for around £30, as well as the tci unit (little black box)

  13. You're the expert Paul, if you say a performance one is best that's what we're having.

  14. Well, the T25 one is the same as the mk2 golf gti one, albeit with some minor differences!!

So technically it is a performance unit...
