Yep we will not be asking the tax payer like othert financial institutions ,however we now only own 30% of the bank and are looking to ship the rest ,food's doing OK.
not unlike the 'friendly societies' that ensured that milions of people didn't starve, throughout lean times...including welsh mining communities.
The good news is that the Lincolnshire division is safe as its run better. The VO-OP is not one big company but many under one flag like the EU thinks it is.
It amazes me that the Co-Op supermarkets stay in business. The shelves normally look like Old Mother Hubbard's, the quality is poor, and theyre expensive! Apart from that a great resource.
It all depends were in the country you are ad to how the shops are run as its not one single business
Thats more to keep the others out though. Yes they open more and more "express" shops or similar but alongside new or existing full-on super markets, not instead of.
Joking aside (though we did not have them where I grew up) the one near me is really good if a bit pricey, and my previously posted about hoover purchase was excellent (ordered at 3.30pm with me 8am next day - £55 cheaper than John Lewis). How did they end up with such a numpty in charge?
All hidden as well ,go from 230 + million profits the last few years to nearly 2 billion loss this year
I often wonder too, although I disagree about quality, I find their own brand to be excellent - but their prices just don't compare even to Tesco who I think of as being thieving barstards. Our Co-Op is fairly crap, never having anything I want and often none of the offers that feature in the leaflet they have posted round the district! True, where my mates live in the East Midlands, their Co-Ops seem good, and I find the one in Perranporth, Cornwall most acceptable. I am a big supporter of the Co-Op, members of my family have worked for them over the years, but I don't think as a business that they help themselves. They have gone through rough patches before and no doubt will again. It would be a shock if they disappeared altogether. CFS may well be sold off but I think the core food business just needs to recognise a few realities to compete.
Im in Nottingham 3 Coops with half a mile of my house. One at the end of my street. Use em all the time as a convenience store. If you want to see expensive try a Sainsburys Local. One has opened near to me much to the disgruntlement of the local NImbys and its empty.
