The plate at the bottom of the shifter? I've always: Put it in 2nd Loosen 2 nuts Shift it a bit Tighten nuts Test Repeat!
Thanks baysearcher. I've tried that but I can't get it in first, 2nd or reverse! So am gradually driving it down the road every time I try it out! I even resorted to leaving it all loose and trying to find the gears but still no 1, 2 or R. I'm completely at a loss.
Well it's just come back from having a new clutch! My first journey out in it was to take the kids this morning and I@m sure it was only going into 3rd instead of 1st most of the time. the new clutch soon smelt very hot. I was assuming that after they put everything back after replacing the clutch they should have re-set the stick shift and that's the problem. Do you think it could be at the clutch end???
This is unbelievable... I've fixed it by accident. I had just given up and was taking it back to the garage using whatever gears I could. On the way I noticed it started going into the right gears. I hadn't fully tightened the bolts in the plate so it found its way into the right place! So I stopped and bolted it up tight and it works!!! Still a bit stiff getting into 1st but I can look at that in future.
