clutch?

  1. What black bush thing?

  2. There's a kind of oil scroll thing behind the seal.

  3. I don't think there's anything like that there. I know they took the seal out but the shaft looks like there's nothing else on it this side of the bearing.

  4. Ok. I've been and had another look. There was definitely no oil return sleeve on there before.
So that would explain a leak!
So my plan is to get a screen then bolt it all back together.

    Are we all in agreement??!

  5. The black bush thingy... There wasn't one. Why would I regret it? Does nobody sell them?

  6. Exploded diagram only seems to show shaft (34) and single seal (35).

@snotty - are you thinking there should be an oil slinger arrangement too?

  7. great diagram! The Haynes manual mentions an oil return scroll before the oil seal, but that's probably another year. GSF don't seem to do one

  8. I can see this gearbox is going to be the death of you ;)...

There's an oil scroll (part 14 in pic) that lives in the bell housing, both early and late as far as I'm aware (I have one in my 091 late housing). It's clearly visible if you remove the bellhousing. Easy enough to do, but drain the oil first ;). You can only replace it with the housing off, but it shouldn't need to be replaced (although Haynes implies you should, which is clearly wrong). You won't find one available from the usual suppliers...or anyone, I'd imagine.

If you want to set your mind at rest, get your garage to take the bellhousing off to check. All they'll need is a gasket, or some sealer if the old gasket comes off intact.

  9. Thanks @snotty - was just googling to satisfy my own curiosity - so this is it (bottom left):

    Sits behind seal and bearing.

No way that's gone missing then - not like its a loose washer affair!

Now bolt it all back up with a new seal before you convince yourself something is wrong!

  10. Actually, I'm wrong - sorry. There is no bearing in the bellhousing, as I recall, which is why the shaft flaps around so much.

  11. Ok. I will have them put it all back together immediately and stop worrying about it. :)

  12. That's the fella . Best not to remove it, as it doesn't need taking out.

  13. Yes, having looked into this more, there is no bearing - the ragged bits i circled in red are actually the tangs on the back of the oil thrower I think having searched the samba for pictures.

  14. Thanks it makes perfect sense now! Looking again at the Haynes manual there is no bearing and what looks like a bearing is the oil return sleeve.
Brilliant. I'm glad that's sorted. You guys are dub-angels. Thanks. :worship:

  16. Thanks for all your help last week.
Got the van back and took kids to school in it but all was not well! :(
Couldn't get into correct gears at all.
I must've been using 3rd instead of 1st as I just couldn't find 1st most of time. Never found reverse except when I was looking for 2nd!!!
What a journey. And now my brand new clutch has taken a roasting.

I'm guessing it's the gear stick needs adjusting? Am I likely to be right?
Was just going to undo those two bolts and have a look, but wanted to check- do those bolts go into fixed nuts or could I lose the nuts in a void?
I have a Haynes manual so was going to follow it. Trouble is I can't tell if I've found 2nd.
    HELP !

Also, in the following pic, is there something missing? There's a clean circle around the shaft so maybe a bung or something has gone?

Assuming that's the shift rod your front shift bush has gone.

  18. Ok. Yes it is. And do you think that could be why I can't find the gears or is there more to it than that? Thanks.

I doubt that's the cause mate.
The new ones don't fit anyway so I'd imaging the lack of one will make very little difference. Someone will know better than me though.

  20. sounds to me like the shifter needs setting then and I don't know how. There must be something on here if only I can find it!
