Clutch size

  1. Hi all
I'm just about to put the engine back in my single cab
Between the crate of bits that came with it and my various spares, I have two good clutches however they measure up to around 215 mm and the flywheel I have On the engine is a 200, I also have another flywheels that is a 215 that appears to have the same outer diameter and the same dowel holes.

Just wondering if it is just a matter of swapping flywheels and using the clutch I have or is the flywheel a later one and not suitable ?

  2. Sorry forgot to say its a 1600 twin port[IMG]

  3. I'd imagine you could use either a 200 or 215, depending on what bits you've got.

Believe 215s were used on the later AS engines - mine's got one.

  4. Good new
I was hoping that would be the case.
I was pretty sure the flywheel came off a AS block.
All my other busses have always had 200

I might be wrong but I think 215mm clutch has M7 fixing bolts? That might steer you one way or the other. If you change the flywheel you may need to re-shim the end float.

  6. Good point Zed
    Hadn't thought of that
When I bought the pickup it had two blocks and the flywheels were loose in a crate, I just picked the cleanest looking one and shimmed it up, not thinking about the clutch. I will put the 215 on because neither of the clutches I have will fit the one on the engine at the moment.
I have some spare shims so fingers crossed.
Do you know what year VW started using the bigger clutch plate? And is it any Better than the smaller one.

  7. More to the point, what year is your van? if it's a post 76, you'll want the 215mm... if it's pre 76 you'll need to go with the 200mm

The more power you have the bigger the clutch - simple. You won't make either slip with a 1600 or even a 1776.

Clutches etc are made to mich-mash - not saying that's good. lol

I have a wasserboxer crank, a T4 228mm flywheel and clutch, an 1800 bell housing and an early 1600 gearbox. Works fine. :)

  9. The pickup is a 73
Im going to go with the bigger clutch as I have two good sets,
Might try and put it in tomorrow.

  10. you'll struggle....

you'll most likely find that the 215 will jam up inside the bellhousing....

  11. Will the pressure plate be too wide?
I measured the flywheel and the diameter is the same just one is machined out more than the other.
Just wondering why it came in the box of bits with the engine I assumed the clutch most have been used on this van
Unless someone bought a very late engine in bits and never got round to trying it.

  12. it's the depth/thickness of the pressure plate that is different...

flywheels are the same diameter

I didn't realise there are T1 flywheels that need a deeper bell housing. Every day's a schoolday...

  14. It's only about 10mm different... but when they introduced the 215mm type 1 clutch in 76, is where the difference is... not sure how you get on with the 1700/1800 type 4s prior to that as they had bigger diameter clutches too, but then that might be something they allowed for in the engine specific gearboxes!!

1800 bell housing is deep - I have one. Any old flywheel in there with a long starter. I drove it with 1600 SP beetle engine up to yours, then back with a 228 T4 flywheel without doing owt to the gearbox/starter etc.

apart from chopping the end off the input shaft of course, then having to fit a bearing in the T4 flywheel...
