Clutch oil seal leaking

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SkutterBob, Mar 15, 2024.

  1. Looks like my bus has started leaking oil from the clutch area again. It has done it before but around 5 years ago and I had the seals done then.

Fingers crossed it is just a degraded seal and not something worse.

Worth checking end float while you are in there.. Probably just wear and tear.. check its engine oil and not slightly sticky gearbox oil coming from the input shaft seal, those fail as well..

  3. Just did mine. Last replaced 4(?) yrs ago I think.

  4. seal that came out of mine wasn't badly worn tbh - the flywheel has a tiny groove in it which i think is just the seal rubbing over time - i suspect this was enough to cause the leak. i'll see how i get on with this one - if its leaking again quickly i might look to replace the flywheel next time.

  5. I don't have the garage space to do it myself, there is a local specialist a few miles away. Whilst the engine is out, I might ask them to do the drive shaft seals and possibly the gear selector. Is getting the gearbox out easy once engine removed?

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Easy enough, the usual disconnect everything attached to it routine. It's much lighter than the engine. :)

  7. same here. i try and do as much as i can, but engine out on the floor in my tiny garage on my own with a trolley jack - no thanks - i paid someone to do that. By gear selector do you mean the little cage thing that sits in front of the box? that's easy to do, doesn't need gearbox to come out. my shift was much improved after i did mine - new csp jobby is a good upgrade.

I often drop the engine straight down under the back of the bus and work on it hanging over it through the hatch rather than pulling it all the way out from underneath.

A groove in the flywheel can either be avoided by knocking the seal in a bit further, or perhaps using a repair sleeve under the seal ( thin steel sleeve glued on over the old surface)

  9. I was thinking of all the other bits that you can't normally reach. Maybe get them to check the gearbox hockey stick as well.

When I dived into the front end of my gearbox to nose around to check things, that was when I discovered the main bearing was spinning and shunting back and forwards in the case ( also used to lock into 4th when I dipped the clutch and braked to a stop. Had to slip the clutch to wind it back into place)

Gearbox repair places charge several hundred pounds to open it up and take a look...then its only maybe £1000 more for a rebuild...

  12. Thanks Mike. Yes that’s what we’re trying - pushed a bit further in. See if that works.

  13. Having problems finding a VW specialist in Norfolk. My usual goto only do modern vehicles now, my nearest is booked up for two months. Trying to contact others but the journey is getting longer.

  14. Think there is one at Swafham or Jason, not sure where he is based though now. Just had our box checked over and taller fourth by JW great service and reasonably priced. Or dont you go TE ?

  15. The Swaffham one is Mid Norfolk Car Company. I have sent them an email. Fingers crossed.

  17. Looks like they have gone under. Phone number no longer works. I have had a response from WeldWagen and got booked in.

  18. Got bus back after getting new gearbox drive shaft seals, hockey stick bush and all the gear selector bushes/guides replaced. Gear selection is much improved.

They also did the flywheel oil seals but it started leaking again by the time I had driven the 10 miles home. Bus is back with them again.

Garage said they fitted the main oil seal flush, where the previous guy did it, had pushed it in slightly.

That sort of leak is usually due to a little groove they missed on the flywheel snout. Pushing the seal in more misses the groove.. Or they were putting the seal in crooked.

[In the final throes of terminal endfloat the seal can leak, but the garage might have noticed that, maybe not if they were not asked to check..]

  20. Got the bus back and the garage had pushed a new seal further in. No leak so far.
