CK gearbox - dual reversing switches?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Oxide Devil, Jun 27, 2013.

  1. Hi All,

just a quick one. Anyone know why a CK gearbox for a 1700cc engine has what looks two reverse switches in the nose cone?

I bought a CK box as a short term replacement for my CM box, while I have some work done on it. When I cleaned it up and checked it over, I noticed it has two switches in the nose cone. One on the side, where the reverse switch normally is, but also another at rear, facing outwards to the gear linkage.

Are there two, or is it for something else?

    Any help or insights appreciated.

  2. I've not seen that before... are they both wired?

I've got one the same - no idea though.

  4. I have read somewhere that some us market buses have a trans oil temp sensor. It could be one of these. It might have been ratwell I read it

Mine's a switch, I took it out for a gander and also it has 2 terminals and a temp sensor would have 1. Unless someone blocked the hole with a switch.

Pretty crap place to monitor the oil temp as well.

  6. measure resistance in neutral and reverse might yield something. I've just fitted reversing lights, 7w CREE led very bright.

  7. Hi All,

    thanks for the feedback.

As I said, the switch on the rear looks exactly the same as the the switch on the side where reverse switch is normally mounted.

There is a brown earth cable in a sleeve that goes around the back and is mounted on a spade connector to the gearbox earth braid.

I don' think it can be an oil temp sensor. There is very little or no oil in the nose cone. Well, I swopped the reversing switch over from my other CM gearbox to the CK box, because it is only a few months old and no oil came out of either.

I think I have a picture somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.

    Thanks again for the input.

  8. I was thinking along the same lines!! Could well be a neutral start switch... especially if it's a usa import!! They had all sorts of odd options!!

  9. Hi All,

here is a pic of the dual switch set-up. I tried to add more pics but I think the pics are too big.

Anyways, was hoping someone could shed some more light on it, or what the second switch could be used for? You can see the brown earth cable that goes to the other side where the braided earth cable is mounted.

Not sure if it is a US box though. I bought it from a bloke in Germany, when I was over there working, but it a possibility.

    Any and all thoughts appreciated.

  11. Hi Nobody,

    thanks allot for the feedback.

I don't have the set up for a 4th gear vacuum advance, but it is really good to know what is it there for and that it will not affect any other systems by its non use.

Do you know if this option was available in Europe, or is it an American / worldwide setup?

Would be good to have this in the Wiki.

    Thanks again for the feedback.

  12. Connect a multimeter across the terminals of second switch put box in neutral then 1st see if continuity changes. Might give the answer.

Edit. Sorry just seen post by scote. bit behind
