chugging and sluggish/spluttering

  1. having problems with spluttering, engine fires up ok ticks over fine but drives ****.changed leads/plugs/coil/dissy 009 checked tightness of manifold nuts seem good.any ideas?could it be the dissy?do i need to retard/advance it?if so why does it fire ok and tick over ok but splutters along to 30mph?
    thanks in advance!

  2. Does it splutter from stationary to 30 mph then runs sweet or
does it run sweet untill you hit 30 mph then splutter

  3.
  4. Fuel filter blocked ?

  5. could be many things, fuel supply, air supply, fuel mixture incorrect, timing or even choke stuck will all give you this problem
has anything been changed or adjusted? what engine/carb are you running?

  6. if it aint fuel system its the timing
    lovely jubbley

  7. running twin weber 34 ict from eurocarb jetted for 16ootp.tick over ok when warmed up(no pre-heat/choke).can rev freely standing still,if revved slowly and increase revs gradually it sounds like it splutters/coughs slightly.
when driven it's awful upto 30mph if revved hard through that speed it's ok.
started van up and backed off idle screw on left carb til engine struggled then increased 1 1/2 turns, did same to the right one,do i need to check plug gap on new plugs?are they not set as standard.
shame really, nice van but missus wont get in for fear of breaking down! peace atlast lol!
    regards.

  8. work this out!!
after carefully checking all manifold nuts where tight,as best as i could,i started van and ran her into town spluttering blahblah, got home and let her warm up nicely.checked linkage and made sure both carbs opened at same time.
backed off idle screw on left til chugged then opened up 1 1/2 turns til ran smooth, done same to right carb.
went for drive following day and no spluttering!!!!!
    could it be dirty fuel?
the process i did was the same as the last three attempts.
do i need to put on rolling road or can i just run as is?
if it aint broke and all that!

  9. It may be that the carbs are not balanced correctly, you say you adjusted the idle speed on each carb and then turned them back in... do you mean the mixture screw? If you have done this with the idle then they may well just not be opening the same.

To set the carbs you really need an airflow meter for the idle or use Punnets formula and take the carbs off and use a feeler gauge between the butterfly and the carb body and undo the idle screw until the gauge just falls out, do this on both carbs. Then reattach and adjust each carb exactly the same by adjusting the screw on each side the same amount until you get the right idle.

Alternatively you may just need a bigger main jet!

    Hope you get it fixed

  10. Forgot to say I had this a bit until I used a vacuum dizzy and changed the jets to 55 idles and 145 mains

  11. they came already jetted for 16tp from eurocarb, shall try them tomorrow on the way to vanfest and see if they are still running ok.
    keep you posted.

  12. well took van to vanfest today and spluttered up to 30mph but through 30mph seemed ok.had same problem on way back.
starting to loose faith in twin ict's quite fancy going back to single carb, anyone know which one to go for 16tp mech advance 009 dissy.
atleast if there is a problem and i need the engine out the carb stays put but the twins will have to come off and then i am back to square one!
i daren't go too far in van for fear of doing damage,is that what i am doing with it not running true??
help please i am at a loss!!!

  13. you need to speak to Laurie Pettit... vzi is off line at the mo (rememberance of 9-11) but I'm sure he put up a post about jetting ict's, his user is mucky green

I remember quite clearly him saying that they don't run out of the box.. and if you try, then they do what yours are

  14. well went back to basics and checked me plug gap, only one was correct according to the haynes manual at0.7 two were too tight and the other was too big, thought they shuold be set from factory??my fault should of checked.
took van to work and runs 90%better,no spluttering/coughing even on rundown to tlights/junction.
just seem to have alittle delay on throttle response,is this normal??it is not a great deal,am i being too fussy or is this normal?
i know ti is not a modern car.
    any ideas?
