Chassis repairs around rear torsion tube

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by DaveH, May 8, 2016.

  1. Hello, hope everyone's enjoying the beeootiful weather.

I have an MOT booked tomorrow and I was hoping to get another year of motoring before I consider another proper resto. However...

I have holes in the main rails under the rear torsion tube, so am expecting this to be a fail. If you have experienced this before, do you know if there is a quick and dirty way of patching it up that can be undone later to repair properly? I'm thinking the sort of thing I can get the local garage to knock up.

Spray some underseal on it that might cover up for a bit.

I'll be doing that area on our bus soon. As with all rot it's often worse than it looks. Ours had been repaired badly in the past but held up for the four years she was on the road:

I'm fixing properly now, but have yet to do the bit around the rear torsion tube:

It isn't a huge amount more effort to fix it properly so as @shielsy says do it once.

Hard to say without a pic, but I suspect you've already decided what you will do. :)

  12. I'm sure it is a lot worse than it looks - always is. I am going to get it done properly but I just need to keep it on the road for another year first. Anyway, the MOT man says he will tack a plate over it just to get it through the test - not structurally sound but better than chicken wire and filler. The chassis has never been repaired anywhere except the sills and jacking points, and is still solid, so I will give the job to someone who knows how to do it properly. Front panel and at least one rear quarter and wheel arch are well rotten as well as some of the places that were fixed when I first got the bus 19 years ago.

Thanks for the info and photos everyone - will come in handy later.

  13. Thats exactly what i did last year dave. Mot station did it to get it through then i had it redone for this mot!

  14. but why do it twice ? get it done propery once

Here we go.I don't know what it's supposed to look like 'new', but that chunky flange at the junction of the tube and the box section has completely disintegrated. The hole is where it used to be. Other end is the same. The inner wall of the box section is intact I think.

@lhu1281: Because it's a big job that I want to do as part of a proper resto. I've got a load of other projects on the go and no time to organise it now. Also, the bus is needed for a friend's wedding this time next year.

  16. It doesn't look too bad .you can get a decent cone shape repair for that area .... I only said what I said because if you quickly weld it now you will have to remove all weld to do it again properly and it probably won't look as nice ..

  17. Understood. I'll try and make sure the local garage does the bare minimum just to cover it up. He knows I don't need it to pass next year. Who sells a repair section for it? I couldn't find anything.
