There is a possible danger of taxing private schools in the fact that quite a big proportion of them spend the last wack of there income sending them there ....Well more fool them some would say , but it is a free world as to what some wish to do with there kids education .
I would agree that maybe taxing the big boys like Eton .Rugby , Charterhouse , Winchester . and so on where they really do have plenty brass .
But the other lower level ones which there are a lot off, they may well take there children away and wish to place them into state .
Worse still if there is a withdrawal of a substantial amount ,that could put the schools out of business resulting in a mass increase going back into state education and the authorities would have to by law find a place for them .
At the moment thats probably something that the state school teachers could do without .
What with Asbestos being a problem and disintegrating structures needing replacement ..then to have to include extensions to the increased pupil population to the already crowded state schools might present issues .
It may not be the case , but there is a possibility times are hard and what with the disturbance in the middle east is not going to help even further .

    Private schools…

Remove charitable status, don’t charge vat on education (think it’s exempt anyway)

Charge VAT on Private Education and why not on your £9K uni fees, so VAT added = almost £11K

The real swine is that charities tend not to pay business rates.

Shouldn't the definition of a charitable gift be to give without the prospect of receiving any benefit for oneself or family? So private schools payments should not pass that test and therefore should loose their current status.

Our children and grandchildren can’t grow up not being able to be a pirate if they so wish. IMG_0046.jpeg

The gift given is to gift a gifted child an education than otherwise could be afforded.

I'm not sure I understand your point @Razzyh. No argument the kids benefit through many aspects, either directly educational; gained confidence, warranted or not and social contacts. But it's not a charitable gift, it's a transaction for benefit for one's family imo. I just wish (naively) the resources could be fairly shared for the benefit of all.

Not all kids have paid a fee. The charitable aspect is that they have given a child a fee free education.

Yes, but I think (but don't know) that it is only a very small number of kids benefit from this. I'd hazard a guess that this is a sop to the charity commission, but now I'm being cynical!

I agree. To confirm, I too think they should loose charitable status, but they shouldn’t charge vat

Few people realise how valuable our public schools are. Without them we wouldn't have had great leaders like Blair, Cameron, Johnson, . . . Oh, wait a minute!
