I lost my old mum to breast cancer, Becky and I collect for breast cancer uk, we do bootsales to raise money and anything I sell on here all the money goes to breast cancer, reading all the comments on here tonight has been quite upsetting, I know a lot of the money we collect goes to research, McMillan and family support, I don’t think I’ll be asking for donations on here in future :(

We did charity evening meals and stuff for schools in Africa and we used to do golf days for ward 5 at Birmingham children’s hospital. My golf days have raised over £5k but I haven’t done them for ten years. The meal evenings usually make £350 ish a time and we’ve done quite a few and built quite a few classrooms and equipped them. £350 will build one and equip it! Haven’t done one since covid but the time is right to think about another maybe?

I agree , reading people’s experiences of charities is upsetting . But sadly they reflect their own personal experience. Keep up the good work and let’s hope that “ a lot of the money” should be in excess of 70% if not then the charities should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

@Barry Haynes I started a response but I cannot continue. As someone who lost both parents to cancer, it is ridiculously painful.

I also applaud those who are giving their time free of charge to the cause. They are ,without doubt, angels. Those in charge taking £150,000 plus salaries, not so much.

Please do not judge us who question that giving. We are not questioning the giving, per se, we are questioning the spending of that gift. I think we all agree, that more of it should go to the cause and not the administration/promotion of that cause.
    Peace out mr H

Yes…but obviously, people are always tying to make a few quid, however you dress it up.

  7. The whole charity thing has moved along from a few pensioners deciding to do the right thing onto being bigger and better which means a business plan , employees , health and safety conscious , risk assessments etc etc. I wholeheartedly applaud anyone contributing whether it be a few hours a week helping out or financially but at the end of the day it's become big business for 90% of the main 'charities' and people perhaps need to realise that higher up the chain are well paid executive posts .
I heard an interesting R4 programme the other day on charitable associations in which the presenter was encouraging people NOT to contribute to the RNLI as it's main assets seem to be property - all those pennies going into the cute RNLI collection tins are used - yes - to equip the volunteers and buy the odd boat but is mainly invested in property on the advice of 'consultants' .
You may remember recently one of the stations were un-volunteering en mass after being given an inflatable inshore rib to replace their boat , the RNLI pleading poverty and cutbacks but in reality they're one of the richest charities which prompted the program.

Re-the RNLI. I organised a small collection last Christmas and we picked the RNLI as the charity to donate to. I insisted that it went to the Skegness station rather than get lost in the whole company by sending it to Poole. I delivered the cheque to the Skegness station, it was made out to them, and received a nice letter of thanks and I'm satisfied that the money will be used for the benefit of the station.

When I was a scaffolder, we did a job for the guy that ran a charity, called Jigsaw. Not quite sure what it was about, but you should have seen where he lived, and what he lived in, near Bath….

  10. That's a great way to donate , you know exactly where the money's going

Im not quite sure what you are trying to say here, so because this geezer lives in a nice house and has a few bob in the bank he’s nicked it all from this charity, not true, he would be investigated and if he was on the nick there’s a chance he could end up in the slammer, some of the people involved with the charity I deal with live in nice gaffs are you saying they are all on the fiddle, please don’t stop donating every penny counts

I did a similar thing when I cycled LEJOG 14 years ago. I was originally just doing the ride for fun but thought it'd be nice to raise some cash for the hospice where my Grandma spent her last few months alive. I ended up raising about £1,200 for the hospice and took the cheque directly to them.
Larger sponsored events always worry me a little as it's not obvious how much of the money you raise ends up going to where it's needed.

  14. Well done - a very personal donation and obviously appreciated
My concern is also money being diverted from the sharp end and swallowed up in 'admin' fees . The Postcode Lottery , for example , supports good causes but if you watch their (expensive prime time) adverts it states that 30% of your stake is guaranteed to charities....

Yes folks , that's 30% , the rest is paying for prizes and admin - oh - and expensive Jason Donovan TV ads .

I contribute to one national charity via a direct debit each month and I'm not saying it's any different to the others but they don't advertise on TV so hopefully there's a better chance of any contribution getting to where it's needed.

£30% of something is more than 100% of nothing I guess. :(

    No, Baz.
As you are not quite sure, as you put it, I will try to explain myself.
I’m not saying everyone is on the fiddle, I’m just saying that not everyone, isn’t… I’m sure a few, cream a bit off of the top, for their troubles, though. Looks good for the tax rebate.
    Know what I mean?

I did something similar, years ago, when I did a mountain bike competition, The Salisbury Challenge.
It wasn’t a charity event, but I went around my workmates and others, to get charity money. You know the type of thing, 20 per mile, or £5.00 max.
I think the entry fee was £6.00, but I took that out of the money I raised, to pay for it. I raised over £150.00, but I still took the £6.00 out of it. ‘Creamed off of the top’, as some would say.
So you get these multi million pound charities, imagine how much is ‘creamed off the top’, for the organisations efforts to sort it all, in the first place…
    I know how it works…People like money…

  19. So you took £6 .... not sure that was in the spirit of charity.
