changing my seat covers

  1. Hi, I have bought some seat covers off Ebay and I will have to remove the old original covers to fit my new ones ..has anybody else done this and is it an easy process? .. I have had a v quick look at a seat and it seems that the seat cover sort of gets clamped behind metal wedged shaped notches if that makes any sense. I just hope its easy ish to do as they hopefully will finish off our van and we can start using it in this lovely summer weather lol
thanks Jim! also sorry if the question has been asked a million times too.......

  2. easy enough to do... you will need to remove the back from the seat to do it properly though...

the wedge shaped tabs will need unfolding as they hold a metal rod in the fabric in place...

take your time, and clean the frame once it's apart and the covers are off

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

You do not need to seperate the back and the seat!
Just note how the old ones are attached and off you go. Third time lucky...

  4. take loads of pictures of how the old ones are fitted so you can refer back.
as said, clean up seat frames and paint if necessary before fitting. new covers on rusty frames doesnt look great

  5. Hopefully you wont find any broken springs when you take the old ones off, I did and they are a pain to fix. I also had to get the back of the drivers seat welded. I think my van must have been owned by an overweight billy no mates, because the passenger seat was fine. When I did mine I tried replacing the original padding with foam and it it did not work out well not very comfortable and it moved. If you do go for foam make sure it is over sized and wrapped well over the edges, and you'll need to use some board between the foam and the springs to protect it. a couple of days ago I took foam out and put the original padding back in, much better if its still in reasonable condition. Some of the metal bent spikes underneath might break off, so be careful and only bend them as much as is needed to get the old covers off. If they break you can use some garden wire or get some upholstery clips to hold the covers on underneath.
