Carbs on 1800 Auto

  1. I have 1800 Automatic (1973) with a single progressive carb which was fitted when I bought the van.

I have spent lots of time (2 months) trying to get the carb set up and seem to be fighting a losing battle and now I am thinking of replacing with an alternative.

Any ideas of what to replace with ??

  2. Have you had it set up on a rolling road...? I know a couple of people who have them, 1 auto, 1 manual, and both run fine, but are jetted correctly :)

  3. not tried a rolling road - maybe worth a last effort

  4. Make sure you have a chat with them first, as some will just tune up what you've got as opposed to swapping out the jets o_O

Plus they'll need to know what carb you have to order the right main jets in too!!

  5. interesting thanks Paul.
I have just read so many negative things about Prog carbs (think mine are Empi ones as well) I thought it be best to get rid and go to twin carbs. Got mate selling Dellorto 36s. BUT if I can save money and this progressive works well once set up = result
Just got to find rolling road near the Wirral.

  6. Weber Progressives are one of those things that attract a diversity of opinion. Some people swear they're junk and would advise getting rid, others have used them without problems. I had a single Weber Progressive carb on my 1776 type 1, and I got it properly checked over before fitting and rebuilt (it was second hand) and properly tuned on the engine. It was always fine for me, and when the new owner of my engine uses it, I'm sure it will carry on being fine. Don't discard it until you've tried to set it up properly.

  7. Thanks BayB
This carb looks brand new and probably set up as from the box - rolling road worth a try (and someone who has the expertise !!!)

  8. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I've come across 2 of these on T1 engines and in both cases the linkage needed extending at the pedal and shortening at the carb to get more throttle. Neither was progressing onto the second barrel. Both were pretty hopeless before but drove nicely afterwards. No tweaking required otherwise though I don't know their history. There's nothing wrong with these, but twins are always going to be better.

  9. My first beetle had one fitted... never had an issue with it... but it was a proper one, and had the correct linkage conversion on it!! Not like these new ones where you have to re-engineer them to achieve full throttle!! o_O

Should be fitted in the next couple of weeks. I think the engine bay is being painted in the next couple of days!
    :)

  11. Phoned up garage with rolling road told him the story and said he said "you will spend more money and time trying to sort the Empi prog carb out than buying a decent set of twins" ....... "we stopped tuning Empi stuff last year as quality so poor and we get frustrated working with them and the end result is not to the standards we or customers want" ..................... "we wont touch it"
Well ....................... I wasnt expecting that answer !!! At least the garage were honest and I appreciated that. :hattip:
I will try another RR garage for more advice.

  12. Fair play to them for being upfront with you... They're probably seeing the empi copies, and like anything empi, these days, the quality is a lot to be desired!! :(
