carb question for a new mate - help?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by rickyrooo1, Aug 18, 2013.

  1. Set the carb like that with it not running. Check the idle valve is clicking as mentioned earlier. If its a empi carb or other repro it may need work. Some just come filled with crap and need a good carb clean and are fine.

does it need to be set after the choke went off though? so let it conk out then mess with it or?

  3. As it says in the diagram mate ;)

Warm the engine until the cam is as shown in the diagram, choke off and warmed up :)

  5. Get your mate to read it 10 times looking at the carb. It becomes the norm then :D

i've text him to tell him to read this thread, thanks all much appreciated, if it doesn't work from the advice given then i'm sure he will have to get it looked at but the posts above sound promising.

  7. If it wont idle after doing the above I would get it cleaned out properly. The biggest problem with the new carbs is they come full of swarf and Poo. As soon as you use them out the box the idle or main jets get poop in.

that sounds promising, the 1st reply i gave him over on earlybay was blocked idle jet.

A loose idle jet would do it as well.

  14. If thats a brosol carb he would be better replacing it sooner rather than later even if he fixes the fault

@chillicamper recently had big problems at idle with his brosol carb
He bought a second hand solex and i refurbed it for him including new throttle spindle bushes( there not a straight forward replacement as they need extra work so the throttle doesent stick)
He said his carb no longer leaks fuel from the spindle and runs better than ever before

These engines are really sensitive to air leaks due to the long inlet manifold length

The new style empi solex carbs are actually quite good and ive run one myself for about 5oo miles
I dont expect the empi one to last as long as a refurbed solex though

It's a Bocar (which are equally pony)

  18. Morning All,

I am Rick's new mate! Thanks for all the advice. I will have a look at the carb later today and will consider replacing it too. Nice to hear from you all - I will keep you updated. Oh and I will drive slower (to be fair the van was empty, wind behind me, coming down a slip road etc)

    Cheers, Dan

  19. Hi,

Just posted an introduction to "Bob" in the "introduce yourselves" section.

    Cheers

  20. My bocar is fine, a bit fiddly to set the idle mixture right. The procedure on vw-resource did not work for setting idle mixture. My mot place let me use their exhaust sniffer to set it right. Runs and idles lovely now dont assume all bocars are pony
