met a guy local to me who just got an early, it's got a singleport 1600 and runs ok on choke but won't tickover when the choke goes off (presume its electric as you don't pull a choke?) i know nothing about carbs by the way anyway theres a sort of step cog that seems to work a butterfly valve? when it's cold it feels like it has resistance and runs, soon as it warms up a bit the choke goes off, tickover drops and it stalls, there is then no resistance on it, when on choke it runs fast and smells very rich, any ideas? i took a few pics i'll add them in a bit, tapa is playing up
Try checking the timing, that seems to affect my carbs but that's a type 4, also the rocker gaps. Probably way off but might be worth checking anyway.
I'd re-set the carb. http://www.vw-resource.com/34pict3.html That explains about the choke fast idle cam as well.
i think it is summat like that, it does look a bit cheap and cheerful i can't remember the name but it rings a bell. i have no idea what that is on them, don't forget up until owning the van i had driven diesels for years or fuel injected cars, the last carb i saw was on my 1976 cortina in 1986.
it runs fine when you drive it apart from no tickover so junctions are fun, it starts well on choke so i thought it may just be the carb, to be fair i told him it may be wise to get it looked at proffesionallly as unless it is something easy that you lot know like a loose clip or summat i'm lost on it.
As your looking at the carb on the left hand side theres a cylindrical object with a wire going to the spade connection With the ignition on but the engine not running pull the wire of the spade terminal then just touch it back on If the solonoids working you should hear a click If its not working it wont idle off choke
cheers so far chaps, i've posted him on earlybay and a link to this topic, he can have a try of what you say para, i should mention he knows absolutely nothing about engines so make it simple and precise please if you have a test for him to do.
Distributor? My girlfriend dads problem very similar, changed distributor and its all ok now. Worth a try?
@Lardy no idea on that one mate, seems a bit strange how it runs fine bar tickover so i'd discount that for now, unless of course more people say that's a good shout.
If the carb isn't set to idle properly, it will mess about, lots of people play with the throttle butterfly position screw thinking its an idle speed screw, best bet is always set the carb to basic setting then go from there, a Haynes manual has a simple easy to follow procedure
see the two clips and pipe ,below that is the tickover screw ,remember where it is and slowly turn it half a turn anti clockwise and see if that works... yes coil a joke ,sorry...
