Sad news, albeit not surprising - 100 is a fantastic age to reach, but to do what he did this last year is amazing. Truly inspirational.
    RIP a genuine hero.

  6. RIP Sir Tom - how on Earth did he get Covid - he should have been shielding

  7. Quite the opposite, he was still spreading the happiness.
According to various reports the family took a trip to Barbados at Christmas , somewhere Tom had wanted to visit for decades..

    RIP Sir Tom.

Perhaps his final action was to show how easily one can catch the virus. It's not as if he deliberately set out to get it.

    Take care everyone.

The PM has announced there will be a national clap for Sir Tom at 6pm.

As for me, I will remember him in my own way. I don’t need to stand on my step at 6 to do that.

    that true?

  13. Very sad, the Captain seemed to be a very nice honest bloke and retained a sense of humour to the end. RIP.
I don't begrudge him his holiday, nor is it clear exactly when he got pneumonia, but from what I have read he wasn't admitted for it until 6 days after he got back from hols. Anyone who has a relative go into hospital for care is very aware this could be the outcome.

  14. Totally agree and very possibly not linked to his illness. Not having a go at him but again...why were people having foreign holidays at Christmas when we were all under strict rules which it appears everyone ignored. Remember the furore of the skiers doing a bunk. Clearly this sort of travel has contributed in compounding our issues.

It doesn’t please me or make me feel clever to say these things on this thread and I like everyone else have nothing but respect for the man and I’m sure he thought it was ok but what were those who organised it thinking. Regardless of whether the trip caused the illness or not it really says to people if it’s ok for national hero (cos he was) to go on holiday ..... I’m bailing out here. I’m not comfortable with my thoughts on this.

It's a tricky one. The express article makes it clear that they went away while their area was not in the lockdown - no rules were broken.
If you think of those who bent the rules, to their advantage (broke them), apparently the Moore's were not among them.

  16. I know where you're coming from and it is in a way understandable. Believe when he flew out it was within the rules. If I was him would I have gone, who knows, if I was 100 having had experiences like he had had, and minded that the grim reaper was somewhere round the corner and I was offered a free holiday, quite possibly. He could have stayed at home and still got it.

As Piers said on TV, it was quite legal, but sensible, that's another matter.
There's no way I'd be flying in the current situation....in a sealed box with recirculated air for poss 10hrs.

What is sensible? What is sensible at 100? Should he have stayed at home and lived another six months but not gone to Barbados?
Should we all be hermetically sealed in order to live to 140, not living our lives but 'existing'?

I don't now the answers, but I'd have been in Barbados trying to not socially distance from Rihanna!
