  1. Now the main rust offenders

    Flakey and paradox like this.
  2. Looks like its gone in all the usual places
Looks a good bus to start with though as from the pics it doesent seem to have been bodged to high heaven before

Have you decoded the M plate yet?

  3. That was the initial attraction. It is rusty, but it is not caked in filler trying to hide bits.

On the M plate, we will decide this weekend. It is the first time my partner in crime will get a good look at the bus, so I will PM you Sunday at the latest.

  4. First day of the strip down today. Daughter number one was the photograhper, so we will work on some framing of the pictures next time!

We got the slave labour involved, shown in the first couple of photos

    1. towbar main bar - 4 out of 6 bolts too some serious elbow grease and a suggestion of oxyacetylene torch.

    2. Engine, it didn't really want to come out.
We also found that the mounting bolt top right doesn't work like Mr Haynes and the Net videos we checked, with the nut being a fixed component and having to extract the bolt over the top of the starter. It ended up being a 3 hour job. We even considered a complete engine and box drop, but didn't have the right type of key for the drive shafts, so it was back to grovelling under the van and trying to get more purchase.

However, it cam out in the end.

After that it was a bit of general stripping back. It looks like we need absolutely every rubber seal going and the plastic in the lights and indicators has also perished and become brittle.

We also stripped the front doors back, ready to take out glass, but the photographer may not have captured that.

Everything coming off is going into labelled boxes.

We got a bargain selection from Wilkinsons Hardware, working out about £2 a box across 3 different sizes. Well worth it.

    Next Steps

The engine comes home, the gearbox comes out, Windows out, running gear off.

    Simple.

  5. By a unanimous decision the wheel holder is going, to be replaced by a big shiny VW sign.

Second dibs if you're getting rid of it!

  7. The strip down continues...

In true type 2 style we are uncovering a few surprises along the way, but the strip down is going well.

Windows are out - Mostly successfully, although we did smash the windscreen.
    Dash and electrical systems stripped
All interior out apart from the drivers seat
The gearbox is out, although we cant get one of the driveshafts to release from the gearbox.

The eldest slave labour is a bit worried it wont be ready for her to learn to drive in in 9 years time....

I'm just pleased the wondow channel is looking repairable, so we can keep more original metal up front and only do a partial panel change.

  8. The strip down continues

Spent yesterday attacking the front arches. and stripping the belly pan. Well, that was the intention. the plan was:-
Step 1 : 12 bolts, belly pan drops away.
Step 2: get a good look at the underneath

    10 minutes maximum.

The actual process. Remove 11 bolts. Realise the last one has had a plate tacked over the top and the front edge seam welded on.

Curse.....a lot....when I realised the grinder cutting disks were sitting on the kitchen worktop at home waiting to be taken to the yard....

the list to repair in that area is as follows.

    Jacking points and outriggers
    Panels above jacking points
    Seatbelt mounts
    Wheel Arches and steps.
    Sils..Inner, outer and centre

  10. Thanks, but I seem to have found a good source myself.

I went on a shopping spree yesterday and have a whole heap of replacement parts turning up later. Will post the pics when the delivery guy finally gets here.

  11. The braking system is out! below are the pics of the front callipers.

At the moment I am pretty certain the pistons are shot as I can't get them to move. I think a bit more trying, before admitting defeat and getting replacements.

    hmmmm, shiny new parts

You can just about see the tip of the fuel tank, that is out too.

  13. Continued the strip down, now starting to paint remove and drill the spot welds

It exposed a lot of bondo and missing metal, which will need to be cut and plated.

and highlighted the patchwork quilt holding the floor together

It looks like there have been repeated patched put in place, without proper preparation work being done. Patches have been put over existing problems which have then manifested and accelerated the rot in other areas.

Does anyone have a picture of a RHD floor so I can see how the floor should look with and without the pedal attached? I am not sure how the rear of the accelerator pedal area should look, as mine is missing. I am planning to replace the rot with a single sheep of metal and remove the quilt.

  16. Next stage is to remove the jacking point and see if the chasis member is saveable or needs replacing.

Currently I'm planning to still use the cutting disk/grinder combination and take it one step at a time. Does anyone have any hints or should I just go ahead slowly?

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

    Chassis member?

  18. Paradox, the wheel holder is definitely going, leaving a smooth front. As first shout, it is all yours for the cost of postage if you are still interested.
