  2. Update....

Mr RAC arrived and now we on way home... Van on his low loader.

Thanks for keeping my spirits up folks..

    :)

  3. Hope it's an easy and a cheap fix. Don't get a T5! If you were going to spend that money you could always get a modern engine put in and go scooby... Keep smiling.

  4. How old is the engine or is it a recent rebuild???

I know this wont help but fixing what you got would be better surely, I have know people with the 1.9tdi suffer failure on a normal day, like you. Cost a fortune to sort out, surely the aircooled lump would be cheaper to fix.
I'm not convinced modern cars are all that and a bag of chips, they certainly look cool, the T5 in particular, but full of all those electrics and toys...... shudder.

Hope you find the fault and its easy and cheap enough to sort out :)

  5. The engine is a fairly recent rebuild it less than 3k. Built by Laurie after my last engine failure. I know what you mean though Whilst on way back saw a t5 on flat bed!

Home now so putting some old clothes on and having a look underneath....

It might be out of warrenty, but call Laurie and have a chat, I'm sure he'd fix it as cheaply as possible.

  7. Okay so it's possible I may have got away with this......

Took rocker cover off cylinders 1 and 2, and noticed that the rocker shaft nut was loose by number 1 cylinder. The actual shaft was no longer flush. Have pinched it all back up tight and reset valve clearance on number 1. Skinned my knuckles and now in filthy mood.

When turn engine anti clockwise to scat mark on pulley, the clearances on number 2 cylinder seem very tight, like I can get the feeler gauges in from top and move them, but can't seem to get them to clear from top to bottom entirely. I hadn't assumed that would need to adjust the others too. Worried and too tired to try again tonight but any advice?

    Thanks everyone.

  8. Get yourself a nice drink, go to bed.
From experience, It will all be better in the morning.

Do all the tappets - the no2 will tighten up if the rocker shaft needed tightening by no1. Simple geometry.

And have a gentle word with whoever did up the nuts on the rocker shaft. Nobody's perfect.

    Have a go tomorrow...

  10. Good thinking.................thats probably the answer.

  11. Quick update....

So after spending an age checking the clearances and double checking, finally got round to starting it this evening....

Sounds good and drives great. It is just possible that I got away with this latest breakdown!

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who posted and kept my spirits up. Especially Bhubesi who contacted me directly.

So at this stage I won't be getting a t5....:p

    :) :) :)
