I thought this until last week. Now I know they can work fine for 20 minutes then cause rampant random misfire. You live and learn. I guess yours is fuel starvation though like t'others have said.

Thanks Zed, I thought that might be the case.

Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of the problem tomorrow when the breakdown place re-opens, unless they've got the week off for Bastille day or something. I'll let you all know how I get on!

Well, the results are in so let's have a look at the scores on the doors...
    • 10 points if you thought my van's problems were fuel related
    • 10 points bonus if you thought it was the fuel filter
    • 1 point for effort if you thought it was the ignition system like I did
    • Minus 10 points for changing the coil and dizzy cap unnecessarily like I did
    • 10 points if you borrowed a jack and replaced the fuel filter yourself like I did
    • Minus 20 points if you thought it could be solved by staring at it for 3 days plus a weekend like 'Louis XVI Derangement Services' did
    • Minus 15 points if you thought it could be fixed by eating lunches like 'Louis XVI Derangement Services' did
    • Minus 20 points for leaving your customer's keys lying around over the weekend so someone could siphon off half your fuel like 'Louis XVI Derangement Services' did, allegedly
    • Minus 20 points for fitting completely useless universal fuel filter in the first place, like I did. Seriously, if you have one go and replace it right now!
    • Minus (insert value of your choice) for selling completely useless universal fuel filters - yes you can buy them for £2.75 from your usual air cooled specialists.

So, for anyone who's interested, this is what can go wrong with this vital piece of plastic with no moving parts; the end of the filter paper is held in place a clear plastic cap. Ordinarily the fuel flows around the cap, but when body of the filter gets really hot on a long run on a hot day it becomes prone to deformation and I think shrinks a bit - the filter paper cap becomes a perfect plug and stops the fuel flow, and well we all know what happens after that.

The replacement proper job one I bought for 3.50 euros in a French part factors. VWH/JK etc please, please take note!!

Glad to say we got back on the road yesterday and now pitched up in a beautiful place in the Loire and completely chilled again! Thank you TLBers - you saved the day again.

  8. I am still enjoying my holiday in the Charente Maritime....:D

where are you going now @mcswiggs ?

  9. Sounds as if your filter and mine came from the same place.
Glad to have been of assistance.
I think I would be prepared to pay a lot more for a decent fuel filter.

We're near Chinon now (sunny, 30 degrees), Noirmoutier yesterday by hire car (wet, 20 degrees) and wondering what to do for the rest of the week, but will probably involve Le Mans by end of the week, then home by Caen on Saturday...
Back again later in the summer...

Yes you were spot on, thanks - my filter was only about four weeks old (put it on while upgrading to proper r9 fuel hose), but first proper long hot run.

  13. I have a plastic fuel filter, but it's a fat square one as my engine is a FI T4 lump, no issues with it so far even though I think it's different to the universal style one you are talking about (mine is square). But even so, I think I will upgrade to a metal one if they aren't too expensive. I need to overhaul the fuel system anyway I think!

Yes I think the FI is much meatier - I have tried to post some photos f the culprit dissected but I ran out of talent.

I may take a piece of pipe and hose clips in my van in order to bypass my filter if I have the same problem.
Have a lovely rest of your holiday :)

Ps @mcswiggs I'm not sure staring at the problem or eating long lunches should have been given so many minus points as they seem reasonable actions to me :)

Yeah, mine was the lower one of those two, but has been value engineered down with a plastic cap on the end of the element rather the most luxurious metal one in the photo.

    For me the Purflux 58 filter is now the filter of choice- take a look at;

Different kettle of fish with the FI I supose, much higher pressure I'd imagine.

LOL! I think it's implied then that you agree that nicking half my fuel was worth a few minuses...

Just bung a spare filter in your box of carry-on bits - and make it a Purflux! I might fill the van with them on the way home..! Ps - love the Landmark...
