Breather pipe in engine bay for 1700Ccc?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Fronkjunior, Apr 25, 2020.

  1. Hi all, I have looked and searched but cannot find this anywhere.

I have a 1700 cc type 4 engine and there are breather holes near each inlet manifold and on the top of the engine. I have rigged something up using pond fittings, but it would be great to know if this is on the right lines or if the original type parts are available.

    Photo's below in later post.....

    Thanks

Breather holes near the manifolds? Not a stock thing. Do you have vented rockers?

Put a picture up of your engine , there’s a metal
Breather pipe that links them together if it’s stock

  9. It appears I need items 9, 11 and 14 from the 1st diagram posted by Andyv. I do not have these in my bus. the engine is stock (apart from this), so it would be good to 'get it right'. Does anyone these things or know where I can get them (I have looked!)? Can @davidoft or @paneuropaul help?

    Thanks in advance.

I can see the servo/balance pipe (9) in the second photo.

The copper pipe in the middle near the crank case breather is weird. The other one next to the manifold... beyond my experience, is that a rocker breather?

Anyhow. Looks like it is oil breathers missing as OP said, not fuel pipes.

  15. You appear to have no.9 already - this is the vacuum pipe to the servo, but does it have the rubber elbows - part no 1?

    Sooo...
This is the connection on the RH head...
    breather1.jpg

And this is how you had it connected before you pulled it off the head end for the photo above.
You have another T connection for the other head?
But what is the pipe in the circle?

Anyone know if 1700 car engines had those head breathers? They seem like a nuisance to me, I'd cap them off and run a single hose from the breather box to the air filter. :)

And you have smog holes 2 per head as per red arrow. The engine looks clean and tidy, I'm sure these are blocked as they should be.
Is it a car engine or maybe this is how all 1.7 heads come, I've never had to buy new ones.

I think I the one in the middle of the engine is the dipstick tube , non bay type 4 engine and the other is an EGR straight into the head,
    Both need blocking off

Yes it’s definitely a dip stick tube. That and the plastic bung at the top of the fan shroud for going the timing makes me think this is a 411 or 914 engine, at least in part.. you can see both in this snap of me 914 GE engine during rebuild... E64BA523-C560-4C87-9506-1606C622C61F.jpeg

Oh, and that breather below the inlet manifold is of course the rocker box breather that on my GE goes to a little three way connector (that short tube pointing upwards in the bottom right of my photo) which then leads to the main crank case breather box.
