Brake lights not working

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mattw, Apr 20, 2013.

  1. Replaced the switch as now the brake lights work. As mentioned, was a quick and easy job :)

  2. Sorry to Hijack this but my brake lights only come on if I press the brakes really hard.
Does this sound like a new switch is needed?
If so where did you buy yours
    Thanks
    Al

  3. Not sure mate but if you do need one I got nine from Just Kampers. Pretty cheap to buy and easy to fit :)

More likely your breaks need bleding and adjusting the switch tends to work or not

  5. How do you adjust the switch Matty?

  6. There is a full stop missing after the word "adjusting" ;)

The switches either work, or don't work!! :)

    what Paul says

  8.

You knew what you meant as you typed it out!! :D

  9. Just replaced the master cylinder on Tilly (75 bay servo fitted) and the replacement had five outlets, front two were one for hydraulic one for switch, rear same one hydraulic line one for switch, rear centre I blocked off with a blanking plug.
The two switches serve two functions one to operate the brake lights, two to operate the warning light fitted on dash that shows an imbalance of brake pressure between front and rear braking systems over and above the pressure regulator ie a broken or leaking hydraulic line. So yes you can still get master cylinders with multi outlets and yes both switches serve a purpose. With regards to the delay in braking to brake lights operating the switches operate at a low pressure and therefore are pretty much instant. The method of switch operated by pedal movement does allow the lights to come on as you take up the free play between pedal push rod and master cylinder piston but imagine a situation where you need to brake fast and hard then try to measure the delay, you would need the help of NASA.

  10. On the subject of brake lights & switches...

So my brake lights have stopped working! I set to and removed the tow bar electrics because they were scotch locked into the loom and were a mess & once tidied up the brake lights still not functioning!

So pulled the connector off the back of the switch & bridged the connections, brake lights came on! Is that a duff switch then?

I only have a single switch, which one do I need to buy? Not looked yet but hoping they're is just the one type and my final question is when I replace it will my brake fluid come out & will I have to bleed the system again?

    Sorry to thread jack :)

  11. If you do a quick swap, you won't lose any fluid :)

  12. Got a new switch for mine, does it need a washer?

  13. No washers dude its a slightly tapered fitting

  14. Thanks
Does it matter which way round the wires go?
Do I just pull the two off unscrew and put the new one in fast?
    Thanks
    Al

  15. All sorted now
    Thanks

  16. Well....
I fixed them , drove 500 miles and the stopped again.
I popped the cap off the switch on the master cylinder and shoved a piece of wire across the contacts and they came on.
So it looks like my switch has bust again.
Bought the last one from GSF
Are there different qualities or was I just unlucky .
    Thanks
    Al

  18. thanks , will do
Should I try and find an original then?

  19. I'd say if you can find an old 70s one, use it!

  20. My old one was a 70s one but only worked if you pressed tbe brake really hard
Is it possible to fix it?
