We had a WB combo fitted four years ago to replace a clapped out Potterton. We've had the engineers out 3 times to repair it :(

  4. That's surprising. They seem to have a pretty good rep.

  5. If you get a Heat Only boiler, findout out how many KW or Therms you existing boiler is so you know what size has happily heated your house for the last 15 years. A Combi would be better when you come to sell, plus you get a mains pressure shower.

I'm in a similar position, I had a thread a few months ago, my boiler is over 30 years old the gas board say the model I have was discontinued in 1984.... I got a quote at well over 6k to swap to combi..... It's therefore still hanging on.

  7. love your story ,you could replace "boiler" with "vw camper" and the gas board been the mechanic ,then finaly giving up your dream and getting a T5...:D

    Six grand.
I think I did read your thread back then and think that mine would be hanging on in there at that price too!
I'm hoping that as all the pipework is in place, and if I just go like for like - ie not swapping to a combi which would no doubt mean re-plumbing vast amounts of pipework, hopefully the cost might stay down.
If it can't even heat water now, it's never going to cope with a winter of heating radiators as well. It's time to bite the bullet. *sigh*

yep that was due to having to re pipe everything as the pipes weren't up to the increased pressure etc and also combi boiler needed a waste pipe for the condenser to run too etc.... realistically i'll never have that money to spend so i will have to wait for it to give up totally and then probably put in a like for like i guess...... my service is due anytime soon - part of me is putting it off as it works and if the man comes out and disturbs something......... i feel your pain, here's an idea - sell that old van.

As far as I can see, after getting a plumber round to "service" a boiler, all you need to do is check the colour of the flame and sweep / vacuum dust and crud off the burner if it's yellow not blue. I did my own for 20 years after that with no problems.

    Any plumbers like to comment?

My dad was quoted £3500 British Gas like ish for like. I asked an old school friend who lives near my dad he did it for £2500. I thought about doing it myself but was bit busy and we wanted my dad to get to know a local plumber and as it's an old friend it was someone I can call on if dad has an emergency. Also I can trust as dad keeps being done by dodgy traders. He had a £3000 burglar alarm fitted after a half hour visit from a cold caller!! He doesn't even set it!

'tis about all they do as far as i can see, he did stick a probe thing in the flue outside but what that did is beyond me, they do a leak test as well i think?

That's why we went with one, although it's only been piddling little things that have gone wrong......not a complete boiler failure. Works fine most of the time
British Gas wanted 4k to fit a new boiler. We got Help Link in to do it for just under 2.5k. You do hear some horror stories about them, but you hear the same about British Gas sometimes too. You pays yer money etc.... Think if we were doing it again we'd get a local trader, like a @Merlin Cat for instance :D

I have an old acquaintance (husband of someone I used to work with) who is a plumber so I'm hoping we might be able to come to some sort of deal, especially if I buy the boiler (on his recommendation) and he just has to do the labour. I certainly would never get British Gas to supply and fit one, way too expensive and I like to use local independents for stuff like that.

  16. if its open flued the ventilation needs checking, check the gas rate as set down by manufacturers.ask what coffee they have ,check chimney is clear and not leaking

  17. I would guess around £2500.00 plus maybe scaffold to get the flue out of the roof

    Yikes!
Luckily there's a flue already through the roof as that is the location of the old boiler currently. Condensation pipe, overflow etc are also all in place. Hoping it might be a straight swap, or as near as dammit.

  19. your going to have a new flue
