Why not use a jam jar lid?? It's round and the edges are smooth.

I've seen a small paint tin lid used on the hot air riser on a T4 engine. It was perfect. Even fitted snug under the rubber seal. This idea I do believe was seen on VZI.

  3. I don't like jam

  4. That is highly flammable ,trust me I know ,hot exhaust= fire , be careful...

  5. I need to do the same, was considering a couple of ends from a tin can with self tappers. Don't like the idea of foam as it could get sucked into the cooling fan if if came lose.
What about peanut butter jar lids? Or is that a bad idea?

  10. These foam strips circle the whole of the tinware, over the top of all the hottest parts if the engine. They are flame proof, unless soaked in oil. Unless your stationary for a very long period of time with your engine running the air flow will stop them melting etc.

  11. Maybe it was soaked in oil ,it did catch on fire...

  12. Just stuff an old sock in it.

Old socks or you can use a piece of an old PC case or CDROM drive cover - now I know why I keep the last broken PC. Its a source of parts for metalwork and short bits of coloured stranded wire.

(Or even better still put the pipe back with the rest of the hot air part of the carburettor preheat as VW made it, and then you dont have to post about the flat spot on a cold day. I assume that because you have a preheater pipe attached to the exhaust, you have a centremount carb, so it will need the warm air, not a chrome air filter :) )
