But it’s not really lazy and unlaboured is it; you haven’t made the engine stronger by making it bigger, the opposite in fact if the crankcase had to be machined for the bigger barrels and be clearanced for a longer crank. And at the same speed it’s stressed exactly the same as a 1600 (or any other capacity) - the engine still needs to produce the same power to overcome air resistance and fictional loses.
There is no replacement for displacement but don’t pretend the big capacity makes it lazy and unlaboured.

  3. Not going for any mad compression ratio or massive cam, Just want to have a go at building something with good mid range grunt that with the correct gearing and cooling runs all day. Engine was tired died im just rebuilding bigger. Didn’t need to but want too

Much the same as me. I’m building a 2316cc Type 4, no machining or clearancing required for an 80mm crank and 96mm cylinders. Mild cam, 41mm x 34mm heads, 0.82 4th gear in a 091 box. But it will still be working just as hard as any other engine.

  5. Apologies in advance, again... but everything you just wrote says 90.5, to me... I've done a 1500 mile round trip in 30 degrees plus heat last Summer with 90.5. If you want power, torque and reliability then this really is as big as I'd go. No skin off my nose, as I say, now I have the Bus for longer trips I'd be tempted to get a bigger Type 1 for the Bug, I'm jealous, but you really are on the edge at 2332, many of the Cal Look brigade don't go this big.

    I'll get me coat!

  6. I get the big CC builds but forced induction is way more fun . That’s why I stuck with 1700 on my supercharged build as they have best sealing of all the barrels . Ive done a few bits on a guys 2.2 type 4 estimate bhp is 350 . Big turbo ,DPR crank , forged JE pistons , titanium rods , new 914 heads 44/38 valves custom WEB cam , dry sump , Porsche cooling etc

  7. That's another way forward, go 1776 and add a low boost turbo, how about that?

  8. I’m quite happy with my choice, might even still use the original case yet just out of shear bloody mindedness.

I really look forward to reading about this build as it progresses; engine build threads are few and far between.

  11. Drop me a pm with your email on it and I'll zap across some useful information for your big engine build

  15. Any decent mech threads are few and far between .....

  16. For anyone considering building a large CC bus engine - Here are some links to something relevant written by John Maher Racing

My engine builder had already recommended what engine was suitable for my needs before this stuff was written, but I had bought & read JMR's performance guide

Unfortunately I don't think its still for sale

Yes, Zedders engine was built by Rob Parry – I think it must have driven him into retirement.
He might be reading though ;). Unfortunately I don’t think he’ll be back.:(
