Definition of a bodge: make or repair (something) badly or clumsily. Fit for purpose is debatable. Don't get me wrong, what you do is up to you. You could of simply done a proper job of it by changing the bulbs. Instead when you sell your van the next person will come along and no doubt say look at this shocking PO bodge and we'll all agree.
A little harsh, Ray! For me, the other way of looking at it, and this is the actual ideal... does anyone know if it's possible to replace the LED in the repro clocks with a good old fashioned tungsten bulb? Personally I quite like the warm glow of the original bulbs, but really I just want all 3 gauges balanced up - and at the moment the new clock is so bright it totally overpowers the speedo and the fuel gauge? Any thoughts if the clock could be modified?
your talking out of your ass pal. i didnt want to fit a replacement led bulb, as i know they are not much better. I wanted them brighter. I fit a lot of led strip as an electrician, and know that this strip will last 5 years plus if on all the time, which it wont be so the led strip will last the bus out im sure. please come and strip my clocks down and show me where it is bodged please
Listen hear chum looking at that, that is a complete bodge you may not think so but it clearly is. This is mine with LED bulbs. If you can't see this then you need to get your eyes tested.
I'm guessing these bulbs slot into the original black twist in bulb holders? If so, where'd you get em from? I could do with a set...
Yes. It's a 'factory fit' no bodging required I got them off eBay. Sorry don't have a link. I'll check some old emails and see if I can find anything.
If you find some, could you post a link please.... I searched but came up with so many I got a bit confused with what I should need!
Are you lot planning to read a book while you're night driving? Why on earth do you need the instruments so bright? As for which bulbs to fit, I just went to the local VW main dealer and got some original bay instrument bulbs from them. The guy apologised that they didn't have them in stock and it would be the next day before they came in. About 20p each if memory serves me.
Try searching for "286 T5 LED dashboard upgrade" there's a firm called classic car LEDs selling them for a reasonable price, £4.20 for 10.
Not at all, in fact as I said I quite like my old originals; but the new clock is way brighter (far too bright for my taste) and I just want the three of them balanced up as at the moment I can't see the speedo because the clock is so bright. So the choice is either make all three LED or see if it's possible to stick a tungsten bulb in the clock!
