Battery discharging through starting motor

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Ageinggroover, Jul 18, 2013.

  1. My fully charged battery (065 in excellent nick) is discharging, I believe, through the starting motor (105Ω resistance to earth). Otherwise everything else OK.

Anyone else had the same trouble?

  2. There are 2 or 3 ring terminals attached to the starter motor (main battery feed included) have you disconnected all of these?

  3. Are you sure it's the starter. All the wires to the rest of the bus are connected to the starter.

  4. Tis true. Are you measuring the resistance with all cables taken off the main starter motor terminal?

  5. At a rate of around 1.3W it would suggest radio memory maintenance.

    paradox likes this.
  6. 1.3W would be the upper end of acceptability after 2 weeks you've lost almost half your battery capacity 1.3/12*24*14=36.4Ah
measure the current rather than resistance that will give you a better idea of the drain. my radio plus a usb charger with nothing connected to it in the glove use 15mA so 0.015 * 24 = 0.36Ah per day Or 0.015A * 12V = 0.18W. If its too high start pulling out fuses in the fuse box until it goes down. When you've finished you'll need to retune all the stations on your radio

  7. Thanks for all the replies. My check was fairly brief. I disconnected everything from the battery live and pulled the spade connector from the solenoid, but not anything from the bolt on terminals. I'll try pulling some fuses before disconnecting anything difficult and I'll measure the current draw (would have the other day, but the battery was flat as the proverbial).

  8. Ok, finally got round to looking further at this. Most of the current draw, as suggested, was from the CD/radio. However, even with all the fuses out and only the main lead to the starter solenoid connected I'm getting 0.6A going somewhere. Any ideas?

  9. How are you measuring the current draw?

  10. OK a little more investigation and the bleeding obvious finally smacked me in the face. It's the clock. Not sure why this thing isn't fused, but there you go. A little embarrassing not to have noticed this in the first place, but at least the "problem" is now solved.

  11. It's probably an add-on by a PO who obviously thought fuses were for wimps...
