sorry a bit random... Buying two for mrs lef ,just wondered what to look for ,ie undercarrage ,colour etc? also I have to make some sort of box with a lightbulb cos there asleep ,can't I just leave them above the fire or on the window sill...? I wanted a pair ,but they are too young to see there tiddly bits, unless someone knows better? @tuesday_wildchild don't say anything, tis a suprise...
Look at general condition of skin, no obvious cuts and infections, look at there nose eyes, make sure they all look ok, no weeping, sore's etc. Are they still in hibernation? Ideally they should be left well alone if they are, not to bad if there just coming to the end of there sleep. If you get a pair, they WILL hump like crazy during the females season, and I mean proper hump, the male will stick its tongue out and everything, its rather amusing.
I thought mine was asleep when i was a kid but it had died you can tell if its a male it will mount others They are very expensive over here now so you must luv your wife to buy her 2
They must be heated from above, so placing on the fire or a radiator will not help As above, check for weeping eyes, nose or mouth.
Also, don't forget they live ruddy ages! So make sure they have someone to look after them when you're gone
cheers ,i think they are half and half ,I would like to breed ,do you think if I buy four it will shorten the odds?
it might not be to bad then, whats the temps like where you are? after a while they should be ok mooching about the house, we had 6 roaming around our house before xmas, although they were older. If you get 4, you really don't want 4 males humping day and night. you really don't, we had one with a weird swing jaw, that looked like my mate, not good when hes humping away, the tortoise not my mate.
they still look quite young... are you building a tortoise table to keep them inside?.you may need uva basking lamps and uvb strip lights for them to grow correctly. as it get warm where you are you have to control the heat. males underneath tend to be concave so when humping its easier to mount the female, but you may not see this until they get older.
There deffinately Young, don't look like there hibernating, maybe just coming out of it, once the weather warms up, they'll be fine mooching round the house. Look nice thou. We've got one left, that's about 80 year old now called Tommy
