apparently, they used to beach them on mudflats to load up with cargo, and float them off on the tide....had a decent draft and were really stable under sail....wouldn't fancy it on a big sea though....
That's exactly it! Sailed across the channel a few times. Used to beach them up in the Spring to scrub off and paint. 5 pts to anyone who can tell me where they're moored up.
It's funny...everytime i go somewhere on the coast, i always gravitate towards the harbour...same in towns and cities with canals....maybe a pirate in a past life
They sail ok in rough (ish) conditions. If it gets bad you just turn head to wind and drop both the leeboards.
Many of The Thames Barges have Twin Gardner diesels that came out of the old the Red London Routemaster buses when they swapped them in the 60's.
my cousins got a lochin 33 , now that is a good fishing boat ,rock solid , fish six in real comfort the pro charters fish 12 out of um . Bit more money thou and drink the juice
