I've always done it with washing line as you've said. Easiest with someone outside to give it a tap with the palm of a hand if necessary.

If you're having trouble you might try this method - I think I heard it from zed.

Run 2 lines of 'string' around the rubber so that they over lap at the top and the bottom. Then work a few inches at a time from each string end alternatly. Get someone from the outside to bang the screen as the string is pulled.

  5. i used a 9 months pregnant woman that would work for cake

i did the pushing and not her

  6. As Horts said ,>>from experience ,(my dad showed me that method)and made it look soooo easy! expect Zed is the fella for advice re this as i remember he said on a past post ,something along the lines of " i"m just going to push /remove the windscreen this afternoon " like ,as u do ? with much respect to/for that bloke ! best wishes.

  7. I presume I am doing it right, bottom in first? That's how all the others went in, Just not sure as the shape of it

  8. Lubrication other than washing up liquid which has a high saline content.

  9. KY jelly!!! And get some parachute cord off eBay. Think it's also called para cord, it's really strong and smooth so doesn't rip the seals and much thinner than washing line.

    Good luck

  10. it's a good test of marriage fitting a windscreen with the Mrs...

  11. She was helping bless her, No actually she was stood there saying i'm not strong enough I can't reach Bla Bla :D:D

  12. You need to run a strong string in the grove with plenty off lube, but im sure you know this already , use a short piece of pipe with the cord running through it to get the cord into the grove, use two ratchet straps , the small ones, about an inch and a half wide, to pull the screen into place while you do the business on the inside.
When i did this on mine the screen went in so easy i thought it was too small , much easier than the fight with the side windows

I used para cord and had 2 mates on the outside pushing it in. We were all a bit nervous to start with and then it flew in on second attempt. Not some thing I'd like to do every day. Good luck

  14. I will try the straps tomoz. Ta, at least they won't moan :D:D [IMG]

You need to get it perfectly centred thenpush the top rubber in as well as the bottom - twist it so the inside goes into the opening - make a loop in the cord opposite the crossed ends so you can do top and bottom together. Don't push it in any further than just enough to get the rubber starting over the lip. Work equally top and bottom from the middle then do the sides, only pushing in just enough until the whole lot's started, then thump it home all round.

  16. Cheers Zed will give it another go tomoz

:D I'd bung Spire Windscreens a few bob to do it - knowing my luck I'd drop the screen and smash it taking it from the shed to the garage

I found the windscreen the easiest window to fit – I don’t remember where I found it but this is the way I did it:

How to fit a windscreen in a few minutes, on your own, without breaking it or bruising your hands.

Clean water marks from your windscreen edges where the old seal was. Use Stanley blade to scrape off old sealant etc, then use T-cut to clean it up like new.

Put your seal around the glass - it should be tight and a bit of a struggle - make sure the glass is right in the slot.

Get some cord - camping plastic covered washing line or something a bit thicker, but not as thick as sash cord. Thread it into the slot around the outside of the seal - a screwdriver will help guide it quickly into place. Overlap the ends by at least 6" about 1/3 of the way across the bottom, leaving enough hanging out to get hold of, AND make a loop with similar overlap at the top, above the bottom overlap.

Position windscreen and rubber in the aperture, with cord ends inside the van. Move it left to right until you're happy it's central. The rubber should be pretty much against the lip along the top and bottom - don't worry about the sides if there's a gap.

    Get it the van.

Starting at the bottom, pull the end of the cord heading for the nearest side so the rubber gets over the lip - as long as it's just over the lip that's fine. If it looks like it won't make it, go back out side and gently push the window in a bit so it will. When you have say 8"-12" over the lip, do the same with the loop you made at the top, again heading towards the nearest side.

Now back to the bottom and head the other way. Do about a foot at a time or less, alternating between top and bottom until you reach all 4 corners.

Then round the corners and down the sides in any order that takes your fancy.

At the bottom corners, you may have to use your fingers to encourage the seal into the corners to get it overlapping the lip.

You shouldn't press or bang the windscreen in from the outside up to this point - laminated glass breaks quite easily, and pressing it in will just make it more difficult to pull the rubber over the lip with your cord.

Now with all cord pulled, go outside and gently thump the window home with the heel of your hand.
