    Ask Mike. :)
But I suggest once the tension is off it by removing the head it will probably unscrew with your fingers.

Done a Google search and the images are indeed of a multi sided Allen type head, just like the appropriate socket I purchased…..unfortunately my socket screws must be non standard as they are just hexagon Allen style.

    Exactly.

If you want some pictures of what you’re working with, give me a shout and I’ll go into the garage to get some. Iirc I don’t think I had an issue with getting mine off. Right tool on a rattle gun I think.

As I said I have a set of the correct bolts you can have but if Razzyh has them it’s easier for him to get them to you.

Don’t think I need to trouble you for a picture….I just need to know that it’s expensive, so be careful.
The socket was correct for the bolts fitted….all but one came with a lot of leaning on a breaker bar …. it appears that they aren’t the correct bolts and look like they have been reused when they should have been replaced.
Have you the correct bolts or did 77Westy misunderstand your earlier post?

  7. Razzyh

Both I think. But pretty certain I reused the same bolts.

Looking at my (incorrect) ones, I doubt that they would survive reuse… and obviously one is beyond hope, so I need at least one, but it would be nice to have correct ones in going forward.

  9. Kays fasteners will likely sell you some of the correct bolts.

Not sure if you answered @Zed's point: hopefully you haven't run a screw extractor/easy out down the middle? That would invariably end in tears.

If the hex recess is messed up, could try hammering a suitably over-sized Torx bit into the middle? Seen it work in the past: the Torx "star" jams itself firmly in the recess.

I'm getting the vibe the the previous installer didn't have a torque wrench or didn't read the manual. They're supposed to be about as tight as a wheel nut, about 85lb/ft IIRC which isn't really very tight and should not have caused you any problems.

The bolt is just messed up.
Tried torx type bit before Easy out… both of which failed.
I’m sure that Zed is correct, the bolts were over tightened by previous builder . This together with using Allen head bolts has made it difficult for 4 and impossible for 1 of the bolts to be removed.
I have tried Kay’s and their fine thread aren’t the correct ones.
Armed with 77Westy’s description of bolts, I’ll have another look.
I thought that I read they should be torqued to 69lb ft …. but I’m probably wrong….whatever the correct figure is, they were tightened way beyond that.

    Bentley says 80lb/ft

My mate wants me to speak to an engineer about removing the offending bolt, but as I’ve mentioned he always finds a way to do a job in a correct but expensive way….. for example my lad bought a nice Volvo C30 for a bit less than £4k…. my mate commented how nice it was and if he had it professionally detailed/ paint correction, it would look even better…. so a grand on a £4k car!
Anyway, back on subject, I need a decent 12mm drill bit to take out the centre of the bolt head , down as far as the start of the thread…. that should theoretically cause the remaining parts of the bolt head to fall apart… hope that’s correct.

A set of bolts here if you want them.

That would be wonderful….but didn’t you mention posting would be a Royal pain in the but?
I bought this type of Allen Key…. 12point triple square bits ….. would these be correct for “proper “ bolts you have?
I can get Allen head ones from Kay’s on EBay, but they must be different for a reason.

  17. I'd imagine allen heads will be fine.

  18. The tri-squares are better suited to doing them up in production, as the power tool won't slip. Allens of the right grade should be ok.

The triple square key looks correct and I can put the bolts in the post, it’s just more complicated than it was. Bolts are free but pay for the postage PM your address if you want them.
