  1. Help!!

Bought an alternator kit from VWH as my dynamo was eating brushes for breakfast. I put it in back in December and it has been great until Friday when the charging light came on dim. Stopped to check belt and it was fine, checked wiring all seemed ok. Got home ok and re-checked wiring but couldn't find anything wrong and when I started the bus the light went out and all fine.

Did a 40 mile trip all fine yesterday but this morning the charge light wont even come on. Have connected the lamp direct to earth and it lights up.

Any clues what might have gone wrong?

  2. internal regulator might've failed... but check that the alt casing has a good earth!!

If it still isn't working then phone heritage for a replacement regulator, or a replacement alt... I'd possibly go for the complete unit as it's under warranty!!

  3. thanks Paul. I have got a replacement reg on the way as I really don't have time to strip it out and the reg was a 2 minute job!

  4. Fair play!!

  5. I had the same with a Machine 7 one.
Replaced the internal reg unit, no change.
Replaced the whole alternator and its been fine ever since.
M7 were great, sending out a replacement before I'd sent the old one back.

  6. So you have a new voltage reg fitted and still no light charging? They can be duff too? The quality of parts these days is shockingly bad! Check the earth behind the dash also. Get a voltmeter and checkthe sort of voltages you are getting? Should be about 14V + Btw what condition is your battery in? Is that earth strapin good condition?

Curious? Why did your dynamo eat bushes? They are supposed to last for years? Did you clean the commutator?
