Alternator pulley nut

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by The Avenger, Feb 27, 2014.

  1. Would welcome advice on how to remove the alternator pulley nut as I can't shift mine. Is there somewhere I can wedge the pulley to stop it turning? Is it a left hand thread?
    Thanks in advance

  2. Look at the back edge of the pulley. There's a slot where you can wedge a screwdriver in against a blob in the alt casting. Normal thread.

  5. alternatively....put your socket on it with a solid T bar and hit the bar with a hammer.....these type of nuts often go when shocked

This works, it shouldn't be too tight. I have to do this with serpentine pully - no slot and tab ground off alternator to fit the pulley anyway.

  7. Type 1 or 4 ? I made a special spanner for type 4

  8. Needed to do this as the charge light was staying on.
Tightened belt by removing shims and alternator started to make a nasty bearing rumble - I guess it has had it as the Red light still stays on?

  9. to tight by sounds , did you watch vid?

  10. I'd doubt it's the belt. If it was slipping, it would've made an appalling racket.

What's the batt voltage with the engine running?

PS Bearing does sound shot, or belt too tight BTW

  11. Battery voltage fluctuates between 12.2 and 19, put some shims back and bearing noise went away.

  12. Ooops. Duff regulator and likely cooked battery if it truly is hitting 19V.

  13. Where is the regulator please?

  14. How many wires are sprouting from the top of your alternator?

  17. There is a White round bit with two or three wires sprouting

  18. Sounds like you've got an external regulator.

...follow the wires, it should be on the firewall RHS.

  20. Thanks, can I test it?
