Alternator (Ford/Bosch) help needed

  1. Hi, my Bay is fitted with a Ford V6 and im just doing the wiring, the alternator has 3 terminals, which i think are connected as follows
    B+ to battery via starter
    D+ to ignition
    W tacho?
    Does that seem right?
I also have an old tacho that was bolted to the dash, from what instructions i can find it says connect to the coil, if the W on the alternator is for a tacho which would be the best to connect to, the alternator or coil?

These are the only sites ive found that have similar connections but im still confused

  2. Big spades are usually battery supply (in your case B+) little spades for ignition warning light/switch...the W terminal is for tacho
I'd try it on the alt signal first

some Motorolla alts have two B+ terminals

  3. Many thanks

  4. W is a tacho signal for a diesel motor... it won't work on a conventional tacho

  5. ^this. You'll need a tacho that accepts an input from the alternator.

  6. if it has 2x large spades and 1x small one side by side in a square hole it will be a lucas acr type. both the large ones should go to the battery b+ (large red cables) and the small one is d+ and goes to the charging light(thin blue wire) hope this helps
the tacho input should be fed from the coil on the switched side (the side that goes to the points) assuming its got them?

  7. Are we talking battery to starter sized cable to the alt or hopefully 35 amp that I have just bought?

  8. usually has 2x 4mm or 6mm cables depending on alternator max charging rate as load is shared by both cables
