Advice needed the nightmare has happened

  1. One thing more never say never , if you look at some of the self done restos on here ie by james ,womble and alike nothing is not possible .

  2. Parts aren’t the expensive bit. It’s the labour that’s a killer. That’s obviously why a self done resto saves so much, but you’ve already said you’ve got limited time and limited experience.

So ask yourself the question. If I start this will I ever actually finish it?

Plus having access to a ramps not gonna cut it. Your resto might take months and months of work. Where are you going to store it and work on it. Baring in mind you’ll likely have to put it on a roll over jig to really attack the underside.

Have you had your money out of it in fun and camping? If so maybe cut your losses and sell it for whatever you can get for it.

    Then buy a transit. :)

  3. I agree with what's already been said - you could just hand it over to a specialist place and let them restore it for you - but that will cost you anywhere from £10k to £20k. For that money you could buy a really nice ready to go one. I am the same skill set as you and would not be able to do the work myself so if it were me then I would let it go and cut my losses .

  4. This is great advice, apart from the buy a Transit ;)

  5. Seriously, if it's special to you, or has some interesting history then save it, otherwise let your head rule your heart and put your hard earned towards a better example.

Put it in the garden on blocks with electric run to it, sell the engine and running gear for a few quid and have a outdoor tv room, for the lads!

  8. I'm tempted to do something like this - but as a small workshop. I reckon a fully stripped out bay would be just about big enough.

  9. Great idea, do it. It would be a form of recycling, you would keep your van and put it to good use, and think of the fun fitting it out and painting it up and you could plant a garden on the roof.

  10. Just need a donor bay now!

  11. That’s a great idea. Never really thought of one as a man cave before. Maybe a home office? Could you squeeze a small hit tub in?

    Complete guess work.
Its pretty much impossible to say what you should do from photos; let alone from your description and some bloke telling you it'd be "£10k to do the chassis mate".
It could be effectively scrap; or he could be taking the p1ss. Who knows.....

If you need a 3rd, unbiased, and not looking for the job, type opinion, I would be happy to look it over for you, if you are anywhere near Norfolk area. :)

  16. Spending the money on family is the priority surely. The van is rot and would need 10k plus spending on it which does not make sense.

    Make your mind up time.

Where are you based? As @Dubs says a 3rd unbiased opinion would be useful. If you're anywhere near me (Poole, Dorset) I'd also happily take a gander.
