Do you have a vw aircooled garage locally. I'm thinking that needs a look over and tune up by someone who actually knows how to. we could do it in an hour but as you haven't done it before it is probably a bit difficult at this stage for you. It looks as if it has most bits in place.

  2. might be a fuel delivery problem 4th uses more petrol or maybe clutch slipping but that would happen in all gears..

you need someone who knows vws to drive it...

the accelerator cable is easily checked ,put your foot on it and does it pull the carbe to full throttle...

of course you have to be two places at once but I am sure you can manage...

  3. thx Mal, well there are lots of garages around and this engine came out of a "vw specialst" this week with a 550 bill (for various work including welding), they took the engine out and did the heads and tappets and I watched him doing the timing, what do you suggest I ask a mech to do?

Soz M - not very helpful there- I was expecting more bits missing tbh- put the breather back on if you can - they have a real function.

  5. thank you for that monsieur

  6. will get one this week, will any hosing do, providing its of the same material?

Proper tune up - Take it back and say you are not satisfied that it is running as it should be or find a different garage. lef speaks wisely.

Yes but the proper bit is cheap enough from vwheritage.

  13. I'd suggest, Wiz, that if this guy does know aircooled stuff, he should easily be able to diagnose what your (rather dramatic) problem is. If he can't, go elsewhere.

    thx for the reply :)

  15. As no one has asked... what speed are you doing when you shift to 4th gear?

Another thing to do is check the gearbox code... it's found on the lower left edge and is stamped in, and not raised letters... it will have a 2 letter prefix followed by numbers!!

  16. it was mentioned earlier :)

Your bus sounds like a typical 1600. Accelerating at 30 in 4th ain't going to happen unless it's downhill.

  18. 30 in third, changing to 4th, thx Zed, so it sounds like the driver and not the bus?

When driving a 1600 bus you have to look at it differently than a vehicle with an engine, so whatever you do don't slow down.
You'll learn to leave a gap in front so you can accelerate to full speed down hills in order to get up the other side.
You'll learn that when driving up a slight incline at full speed in 3rd (about 45mph) there is simply no point then putting it in 4th because it will slow down. Same goes for 2nd if you find yourself in that situation. So stay in gear, take your time and let it scream a bit - it's noisy (air-cooled engine's are) but it's easier on it's teeny engine and it'll get lots of cooling.
